I saw the title and got excited. Now I'll probably feel bad for the rest of the day.

Sweet! I bet this thing will only need oil changes once every 30k miles and won't have any problems at all starting in the cold! It'll probably get 40-50 mpg too! Thank goodness for cutting edge technology!

Its actually no difference. The Japanese model has always had 250, while we were at 238.

So it has a different color red paint and has black interior.

This special edition RX-8 comes with the exclusive True Red Style body color that is not available to the other RX-8 models. It also has special features such as black leather interior trim, a black leather-wrapped parking brake lever, a black leather-wrapped steering wheel, and semi-gloss finish chrome lamp bezels, all of which reinforce the strong, sporty image of the RX-8.

Main features of the True Red Style RX-8
Base models
RX-8 'Type S' (with a six-speed manual transmission/6MT) and the RX-8 'Type E' (with a four-speed Activematic automatic transmission/4AT).

Special equipment
- Black leather interior trim (genuine leather seats including the eight-way power driver's seat with power lumbar support and matching door trims).
- Leather-wrapped parking brake lever (black).
- Leather-wrapped steering wheel (the 6MT model comes with the piano black color audio switch panel on the steering wheel).
- Semi-gloss finish chrome bezels for headlights rear combination lamps.
- 18-inch tires and aluminum wheels, combined with large front disc brakes and sport-tuned suspension (special equipment on the 4AT; standard equipment for the 6MT base model).
- Advanced keyless entry and engine start system.
- Water-repellant windshield, front door window glasses and door mirrors.

Body color
A youthful, vital image is conveyed through the vivid crimson True Red exterior paint, which is exclusive to this RX-8 model.

Did I miss anything?

Isn't it just the case that they count their horses differently or have more leeway in what figures they can publish?

I THINK that is correct. Their figures are 250ps, which is like 247hp (the original number Mazda USA came out with). Then once they accounted for the more strict emissions, it went down to 238hp.
