Picked up this DVD while recently visiting Japan. I think you can also find them on ebay. Hot Version vol. 73 has a very cool segment on the RX-8. Here's the video preview: http://www.bestmotoring.jp/digest/HV/video/hv_73.asx

Amazingly, the RX-8 won! This was a damp and twisty track, under cold conditions. The "Drift King" Keiichi Tsuchiya was driving the 8, maybe that had something to do with it.

The video theme was all about if the RX-8 could be made into a pure sports car like the RX-7. They concluded by saying the RX-8 is indeed a true sports car, despite its 4 doors, but a sports car that is in need of more power.

sweet trailer..haha made me want to buy the ddvd. I LOVED the 787b in the begining..that is one sweet sounding ride.:D

No month is shown on the DVD case, make sure you get vol. 73 of "Hot Version".

The one on Ebay is a Region2 DVD.

What is a Region 2 DVD?

I think it means that our DVD players here in the US will not be able to play them. I believe we are Region 1

It appears it is based on whether it is PAL or NTSC, if you buy a PAL dvd and your player only plays NTSC, then it will probably not work etc.., I could be wrong but judging from this article that might be the case,

I think Region 2 means Asia. If you go to chinatown of any city and purchase a $30-50 'no name' brand DVD/VCD player (Usually generic names but all have roughly the same design. ie. very small, silver finished, outer casing) will have a decoder for playing the asian DVD/VCDs. However, any competent CD-Rom drive will be able to play these discs on your computer and major outlets are starting to sell DVD/VCD players that can support these as well... Just make sure you get the cheap ones, from experience, I find the cheaper ones are better.

Just to summarize/clarify what's said on this thread about DVDs...

Each region in the world has a code assigned to it. DVD players are legally supposed to only play DVDs for that region. The US is Region 1. Asia is Region 2.

This region encoding includes DVD players on computers. You normally have to set the region on them as soon as you start working them. I think DVD players on computers usually allow you to change the region 5 times before becoming permanent. Though there are some programs out there that'll skip the region encoding on your player.

PAL and NTSC are television signals. Some DVDs are made for NTSC and some for PAL. You can't play PAL on NTSC dvd players/tvs and vice versa. But some DVD players will accept either PAL or NTSC and convert the output to either PAL or NTSC. If you're in America, your TV is NTSC and your DVD player is most likely NTSC. Computer DVD players don't care about PAL vs NTSC though!

If you want to watch foriegn DVDs your best option is either
1) buying a hackable dvd player. search online and you can find ones that people have hacked. a friend of mine bought one recently from best buy which was easy to hack and it now plays all region plus NTSC or PAL.
2) buy region free foreign DVDs. Region free DVDs can be played on any DVD player provided the PAL/NTSC thing matches.
3) use your computer. either watch it on your computer with a program to ignore region encoding or rip the DVD on your computer and burn it on another DVD without region encoding (most rip/burn programs create region free DVDs)
4) buy a region free dvd player. i don't think you're supposed to sell them though so you'll have to find a slightly more shady venue to buy it from. :D

Don't know if they make a region 1 or region free version yet. It's a pretty new release since they review the Greddy Turbo RX-8. Mine is also region 2, all Japanese, no English subtitles. I need to play it on my PC or on my Japanese PS2.

I don't think the greddy turbo is that new in japan though. I could be wrong but haven't they had it for awhile?

It's all in japanese, I don't think there are any subtitles either. I had the previous hot version with the feed rx8 (that beat the 350z) and it was not english friendly.

I took the plunge and ordered it, I'll let you all know the scoop.

Well, I thought so, it has other features besides the RX-8 segment too. But then again, I can speak Japanese.

Found this dvd player today that appears to be "region free", it is a Phillips DVP-642, it also plays Divx etc.. anyone here have any experience with one of these?

It's not region free, until you enter the codes on the DVD in order to make it ALL region. The codes can be found on the web by googling DVP642. I have the DVD player (with the hack code) and it plays all regions from 1-7.

FI can be a relatively minor mod... how much power did the cars make?

You ever watch the end of the Lancer vs Impreza Best Motoring video? There is a race a between a modified FD3S, S15, GTR, and Supra. The FD made 350 hp while the others made ~525, 550, and 600 hp. The FD dominated in the turns and managed to hold them off for quite some time, but eventually the power disadvantage killed it on the uphills (but it was only 0.7 seconds slower around the 100+ second track than the 600 hp Supra!)

Anyway, they weren't lightly tuned :)
