New Blurb in Popular Science

Sorry, travelling and don't have a scanner. Here is the text.

from Popular Science, February 2003:

What's New

MAZDA'S OLD-TIME ROTARY RELIGION RETURNS
and new design tweaks for its wankel have cleaned up the engine's act.

It warms the heart to hear Mazda explain the return of the Wankel: "We happen to be rotary-engine zealots," says Charlie Hughes, president of Mazda North American Operations. In car engineering, zealotry is good. The Renesis capitalizes on the inherent strengths of rotary technology -- it's compact, lightweight, simple and fuel-efficient -- without the drawbacks, most notably high emissions. Renesis will debut this summer on the intriguing RX-8 (right). This is a car that sports a nice compliment of automotive eccentricities, including suicide doors, but its heart is a rotary. Next question: How many will buy into Mazda's zeal for 30 grand? -- Dan Lienert.

There is also 4 diagrams, depicting the cycles, and a photograph showing the new side housing. This photo incorrectly identifies the 13B as having a peripheral intake as well as exhaust. The photos themselves are right out of the press-kit, and have been seen in other magazines. It also gives the following stats:

POWER: 247HP@8,500 RPM*
TORQUE: 159 LB-FT.@5,500 RPM
WHEELBASE: 106.3 in.
WEIGHT: 3,000 pounds (EST.)
MILEAGE: 19 city/24 HYW (EST.)
PRICE: $30,000 (EST.)

*210-hp version coming in fall.

It's great to know that Mazda will be able to deliver even better EPA #'s and all for only $27k. :)

Damn beat me to it. J.K.
It is a good issue this month you should pick it up. It has a nice pic of the new side ports design. They also have a blurb on 5 classic in foreign innovation. The 1967 mazda cosmo 110-S was on the list. It is on page 66 for those who have the mag.

also don't forget about the NCU RO-80 listed on the Classic 5 list.

it's very rare to have TWO rotary-powered car included in any list ;)
