looks like a sedan

pdxhak 01-13-2010 01:06 PM

The article said the test car used the mazda 6 body and front/rear bumpers.

Yes, but the Mazda 6 is (like all cars) a unibody car. There isn't anyway to just put the body parts from one car onto another. Turning a FWD car into a RWD just to test new parts would require a lot of work. It would be better to test with a current model RX8.

wasn't the mazda speed 6 AWD? who's to say they didn't use that chassis? I have no clue. If I didn't want anyone to know what I was doing then it would be worth it to me anyway to put it in a completely different unsuspecting car like the 6.

ac3mastuh 01-13-2010 01:31 PM

how can we even confirm that it has all the underpinnings for the new RX-7? It just looks like a Mazda6 and it might be a Mazdaspeed6 for all we know

fuztupnz 01-13-2010 01:38 PM

Looks like they taped some rx8 headlights to a mazda6 and called it a day. I have a hard time believing that it is a chassis mule. The 6 doesn't closely share any structural items or measurements to any rx vehicle. Not to mention, its a horizontally opposed chassis which means buckets upon buckets of work to make rwd. Even the MS6 was horizontally opposed like its fwd brothers.

Easy_E1 01-13-2010 01:40 PM

Sound clip would confirm engine model. But no. No one has a sound clip.

Jedi54 01-13-2010 01:45 PM

yeeaaahhhh.....

I'll believe this when I see it.

Under the hood, power will be provided by a turbocharged 1.6-liter Renesis 16X Wankel engine with at least 300 hp.

JinDesu 01-13-2010 01:53 PM

I don't see any curves!

kersh4w 01-13-2010 01:55 PM

more like 2012 MAZDA6 TEST MULE.

christ...

JinDesu 01-13-2010 01:58 PM

I don't mind a Mazda6. I hope to god they would make another MS6.

But the RX-7 and RX-8 looks so good because of the curves! Just like how the GT-R and the Skyline breed looks so good because of their sharp lines!

CarAndDriver 01-13-2010 03:11 PM

MS6 would definitely be a nice one.

Floyd 01-13-2010 03:27 PM

Does anyone else think that the rear tires look significantly wider than the front tires? That says RWD to me...

arghx7 01-13-2010 03:57 PM

if it is turbo (and who knows really), I wonder if it is 4 port like the 13B-REW or if it is 6 port like the 16X prototype displayed a couple years ago. A factory 6 port turbo would be a first.

rubberduckie 01-13-2010 04:41 PM

They had me at turbo... It looks nothing like any rx vehicle. Would they go through that much trouble?

Here is a wiki on mules:
"A development mule or a test mule in the automotive industry is a vehicle equipped with experimental or prototype components for testing. Automakers evaluate aspects of vehicles before a full pre-production car is built to find problems. Mule cars are drivable and may come after concept cars that sometimes lack critical mechanical components.

Mules are often heavily altered and the exteriors may be disguised as current production vehicles or as completely different models. Some noticeable alterations include simpel cylindric shapes for the lamps in the taillights, different rims on the front and back without centrecaps, and a severe amount of added plastic and dark tape to hide the actual shape and design of the vehicle. They are most often used very heavily during testing and are scrapped."

hornbm 01-13-2010 05:59 PM

It makes sense that mazda is going this with a mazda 6 shell on the mule. They have yet to show a concept, so they likely dont want design ques from the mule leaking out. However looking at the mule, I there are some definite hints that this is rwd, the most noticeable is that the rear tires seem to be wider than the front tires.

I'm usually quick to call BS on rx7 rumors, but i think this is legit.

Juice 01-13-2010 06:32 PM

My vote goes to MS6, certainly not the next 7.

alz0rz 01-13-2010 06:46 PM

Hmmm,,, worldcarfans.com publishing something like a "turbocharged 16x" .. damn... makes one wonder.

Poop 01-13-2010 07:56 PM

The article did not even show any prove of having a rotary engine. How does one state it is the rx-7 mule? Also, it is hard to say if the rear tyres are really wider than the front because it is at an angle.

RWagz 01-13-2010 08:04 PM

100% not an rx7 revival mule

altspace 01-14-2010 06:50 AM

The test mule Mazda 6.

i agree its a mule. i agree it might even have a rear wheel bias based on the tires. but it clearly doesnt have a rotary in it.
