MSN- 25 overhyped vehicles. rx-8 is 22nd
http://autos.ca.msn.com/photos/galle...622607&page=23
Wow. They really ran out of cars to post the rx8. http://blstb.msn.com/i/92/3D87642C6E...7F847C48C3.jpg Everybody raves about the fact that it looks great and packs a rotary engine; but what about the fact that it guzzles oil and gas plus has the world's first torque-free powerplant? |
These internet lists mean nothing.. the guy who wrote it has never driven 80% of the cars on the list or and probably hasn't seen half in real life. They're popular though, drive traffic to the site, which is why there are so many of them.
|
OMG everybody should get a Civic !
vtec just kicked in y0 ! overhyped? maybe. but hmm, Damn, I was in Macau last month and DAMN, that Knight Sport RX-8 ate that Evo alive with 500 ps won 2nd place ~~~~ AHHHHHH must be hyped. must be ... |
Looking at the numbers and specs of the RX-8, I can easily see why its over hyped... I mean compare the Renesis to a LS motor and compare power/economy... BUT drive a RX-8 it all seems so clear!
|
^ amen
|
What a horrible list.
|
haha my thoughts exactly.
|
ugg.. i will never get back that 5 minutes of my life...
|
The author of that list wants to sound superior to the rest of the automotive world by saying some cars are over-hyped, when clearly they are just 'different' from the regular trends in the automotive industry. The author was going for shock factor by saying cars like the beetle were over hyped. Some of those cars were ridiculous, but nonetheless, the author was going for a shock factor. I guess it makes more people read his articles while they pass time at work. I like the RX8, but I can certainly see why he says that it is over-hyped. It is a fun car to drive and not too many people have them, and they seem mysterious with their rotary engine. The RX8 is unique, just like most of the other cars on that list. I really don't understand how he can say the Ferrari was overhyped, it's a FERRARI! Seriously, how many of those could have been made? Also, he wrote two sentences about each of the cars and neither of the sentences contained a reason as to why the car was over-hyped, just commentary as to why it wasn't a good car. The Prius one said that they should have just made a small diesel compact, but haven't those compact diesels already been made? The pictures of all the cars were nice though...
|
Wow, what a list. I'm surprised there weren't more american cars on there since it's from the UK. I'd love to see what he drives.
|
For a vehicle that isn't even advertised, it cannot possibly be "overhyped". Most Mazda dealerships believe the rx8 has a v8, and that Mazda hasn't made a rotary since the rx7.
With so many facetious reasons listed for every car, from "ancient suspension" to "lacks dynamics" to "looks ugly", it is impossible for the writer to not be guilty of at least 5 of his own reasons. So stupid. |
lol that guy is dumb thought i do agree with him on the prius
|
The RX8 is overhyped because for many years car magazines have had the 8 winning in many sports car comparisons. Problem is they were just reacting to how fun (easy) it was to drive. They weren't really living with it. If they had lived with it from day to day, summer-winter, year after year, they would've had another opinion. You have to look at the price you bought your car for, the years of maintenance, that will give you the true cost of ownership. When looking at the 8 this way, it's not worth it. Never mind the feeling I get when I get behind the wheel and drive her.

... and the shrinking of penis sizes starts

You couldn't pay me to click that link.

World's first torque free powerplant??? If people seriously think a Renesis has no torque, go drive a Civic or any other car with a small engine. Go drive an S2000. Sure a rotary has less torque that a worthless in today's car world V8 but that doesn't mean that it's torque free. It's a small engine with a short stroke. What do people expect? The fact that it's so smooth makes power delivery deceiving.
FWIW: A formula 1 engine has far less torque than many street cars do! Read my sig in regards to torque. |
wow...I didnt even know the rx8 was hyped up? most people dont know wtf my car is. Not to mention its a sports car, lets see...ummm yea its gonna use gas
|
I can't understand how he did not put the Lamborghini Diablo or Countach. They were such shit cars it was so hard to drive them.
Yeah, s2000s really have nothing lol. |
ok I just looked through the whole list and to tell you the truth most of those cars shouldnt be considered 25 most hyped cars. I think their definition is slightly flawed.
|
Was the RX-8 ever "hyped" at all?
Most non-enthusiasts either don't know what an RX-8 is or don't know that rotaries engines exist at all. I can't remember ever seeing a TV commercial, magazine ad or anything for this car. Where's the hype? About the only people I can think of who "over-hype" the car might be the guys who make Forza where the car comes stock with about as much power as a stock 350Z and hits 160+ on the oval no problem. |

talan7 said it was due to the magazine press, and top reviews, etc.
But that was years ago, and didn't have an effect on the general public consciousness at all. |
its just another dumb internet list. means nothing
|
For over-hyped, how about every V6 mustang ever made that still calls itself a mustang?
It's sad that we live in a world where 40-50million americans see nothing wrong with a driving around an automatic, V6 "mustang" that needs the FORD never fail 50k alternator & water pump replacement bundle. That's not an overhyped car and the rx-8 is? Or maybe the hummer H3? I-5 with no more clearance than your neighbor's X5, and can't get out of its own way, overhyped maybe? Geez |
No Pontiac Aztec? No Crossfire? No way!!

at least there are some other pretty good looking cars there in your company. RufusVonStorm. Have you seen the 2011 300hp v6 mustang coming out? 30mpg highway. NA. They likely didn't fix the water pump yet though.. LOL |

Yeah, s2000s really have nothing lol. Am i missing something? The 8 (MAYBE) makes marginally more torque <6000 rpm. The s2k definitely makes more >6000 rpm. ap1's will also dyno (dynojet) 195-200+ whp all day long. ap2s a bit more :scratchhe |
i don't mind being on the same list as Astons Martins and the SLR McLaren :)
|
Um, you guys do realize this is on MSN, therefore it's not really targeted towards car enthusiasts like us?
I understand the outrage if it's on autoblog or caranddriver, but it's msn people... What's next, bash on Oprah because she mentioned the RX-8 isn't a good choice for her audience? Good Home Living doesn't like the amount of maintenance this sports car needs? Entertainment Weekly doesn't like it as a celebrity hot ride? |
The feel of the RX-8 is amazing, despite it being underpowered, and an oil/gas guzzler. Big deal, its an effin sportscar! They do make Prius' for those that care about shit like that. Not to mention, the aftermarket has grown nicely in the past 2 years for the 8.
|
that author is a complete whiner. it was just whine whine whine whine whine. nothing is ever good enough for him.
reading through that made me want to kick him in the nuts. |

LOL, this guy obviously knows nothing if he claims the F348 has bland and boring styling. It's styling lead to probably one of Ferrari's best selling cars of all time the F355.
Pay no attention to this list, this guys is smoking something. |
The hype started with the RX-evolv concept back in 2000. Mazda was saying the renesis was going to put out over 300 NA horse. It was also claiming that it would be lighter than the RX8 ended up being. Then they had to revise the actual output when the it did come out. I still love driving the RX8, but initially it was overhyped.
And the guy that wrote the article is retarded. |
The list has many best of's
They are smoking crack. 1987 Renaut Alliance? 1994 Mercury Mistake? 1984 Dodge Rampage? Lada, Skoda, Wosely? Any Conversion Van? some of my worsts. |
The who editorial lacks any polish. The following quote was taken from the Aston Martin Vanquish slide, the comment just looks wrong to me:
It wasn't until the swan song S was unveiled that the Vanquish finally got the chassis it deserved - until then, buyers forked out over $300,000 for a car that wasn't really very good. |
"guzzles oil"
it seems like everyone who doesn't actually own an 8 seems to think this is the worst thing in the world. Does it actually bother anyone at all that you have to add a little oil every few fill ups......? I would say far from guzzle it's around 1 bottle between every oil change. I guess some people can't handle spending about as much as they spend on one gallon of gas. |
