Mazda Profits Surge 35 Percent
Mazda's earnings for the Japanese fiscal year that ended March 31 were 35 percent better than in the prior year, the AP reported on Thursday. Profits totaled $432 million, though sales fell by 7.6 percent due to changes in the way overseas affiliates booked vehicle sales. With those counted separately, Mazda sales rose by 4.7 percent in the past fiscal year. Stronger sales in Europe, better profits in North America and cost-cutting moves overcame sluggish production in Japan. Mazda expects profits to rise an additional 20 percent in the coming financial year.
