Mazda Millenia Is Dead-Stepping Away From Luxury Cars
 

Apparently Mazda will concentrate on Compact & Sub Compact Cars
and Sports Cars "where they have significant strength".

I'm not surprised. You don't really see too many around. For the price of what it costs most people would probably go for the established Maxima instead of that.

It seems to me that there is a Mazda 9 in the works. Sounds like upscale to me brothers.:cool:

millenias are surprisingly pleasing to the eyes.

hmmm... but according to this page and some other things i have read the 9 will be a crossover vehicle based on the 6. Here is a pic:

Oddly enough, I always found the Millenia to be a very attractive car. This is espceially true for the S type. I sorta hate to see them go.

Ahh... but Mazda's gotta make room for the 6. Personally, I think the Millenia is much more svelte looking and would take one over a 6. Also, as MRocks stated, an affordable luxury sedan by Mazda is up against some pretty tough competition (Maxima, ES300, I35, G35). It is a very crowded car class. Unfortunately, not many people would equate Mazda and luxury. :(

The Millenia flagship was to be the entry level of "Amati", Mazda's luxury division back in 94-95 answering back to Acura, Lexus and Infiniti. The program was scrapped when the Yen took a dive and other issues. The 2.3L S-model supercharged motor is an engineering masterpiece, with the Lysholm compressor putting out 220 hp(!), winning numerous auto design accolades. MPG was excellent also. Another great car no one knows about. Unfortunately the car is very expensive to maintain(right Hercules?). The 6 sedan/5 door hatch/wagon are replacing the car for now, but don't be surprised to see the MX Sport Tourer take its spot.

Trivia question: Before being re-badged and imported from Hofu Japan as a Mazda, what was the Millenia's original Amati designation? ;)

Couldn't have said it better. It is a pretty crowded class and usually people willing to spend around $30K will go for Acura, Infiniti, Caddy or Lexus. That's why you don't see too many Mitsu Diamantes around as well for example. People probably aren't going to justify spending that much for a mitsu when they can get a car from one of the luxury marquees for around the same price.

well according to the mazda magazine i got, millenias are selling very good, i can say that 75% of everytime i go out i see a 2001 or 2002 millenia up in here (miami), people always stare at it, its a nice car but the v6 version was too slow,it needed a navagation system, and more room, but the sound system is awsome, i doesnt even need subs or amps, its a great car and i love to rev it :D ill post pics of it when i get my brother to lend me his digital camera

mazda not being recognized as a luxury car

this is the problem....but it seems to me that they are slowly upping their class level and have of late been coming out with a lot of high quality luxurious cars at a competetive price.

I have a 99 Millenia S and I love it!! I am going to be sad to see it go in a few weeks when my 8 gets to the dealership.

It now has 53,000 miles on it, and I have had to do absolutely nothing to it besides oil changes and a new set of tires, so I'm curious about Toadman's high maintenance cost comment.

My understanding is that this is the last year for the Millenia. There will not be a 2004 right? I always thought they were pretty good sellers too because I see them all over the place here in St. Louis, but the dealership I'm getting my 8 from says they are practically having to give them away to get them off of the lot.

As someone who owns a Millenia, I can say that it is one of the best cars around. The engine is quiet and smooth and powerful and gets decent mileage. I have the standard engine.

For a comparison, I have driven my aunt's Lexus ES300 and can say that the Mazda is both smoother and quieter. If this car has a flaw, it is that it was not marketed properly. Consequently, it has not sold as well as its competition.

I hope the new Mazda9 uses a Mazda engine as I have seen just how quiet and smooth the Mazda V-6 engines are. The crossover is a welcome addition to the Mazda family. Hope it can seat more than 5 adults.

Millenia's Poor Sales
 

In response to 91vert, you have so far been privilleged to have not required a major service.Having worked at a few Mazda dealers myself I feel compelled to mention that the 60k(miles)
service averages about $1500 since it is necessary to check valve clearances and adjust as needed(bucket and shim).
Donny Boy makes an interesting point.My own personal theory is that Mazda was quite low on cash by the introduction of the Millenia(A fantastic car by the way).Does anyone have any particular memories of Mazdas wonderful advertisements for this car?I don't think there were much of any,hence the sales response.First impressions can only be made once.
My recomendation to anyone considering this fine piece would be to go with the low-tech 2.5 KL engine(at least compared to the KJ.) unless you can afford the heavy service bills.

Which models had the 2.5 KL?

2.5 L is the normal v6 the 2.3 is the s for superchager.I have a 99 S also i love the car. CERAMICSEAL you hit the nail on the head they didn't make any advertisements for the car .

The 2.5L KL 03 engine was a great piece. I have one in my 93 Probe GT with 180K miles -- still very strong, very smooth, and very stingy on gas (~27 MPG). Folks in the market for a Millenia would be well served to get one of the KL-equipped models.
