This kind of marketing BS really ticks me off....

I was @ a Barnes & Noble store going through some magazines a couple of weeks ago. I was getting ready to get my fix of caffeine & car magazines. I picked up an issue of Turbo Magazine, which was one of the few I hadn't read yet.
I get the magazine, get my coffee and go sit on the patio. An hour later, I was done reading, smoking & drinking. I dropped the mag on the table, when I notice an add on the back. It was a Greddy ad. Upon closer inspection, it was an ad for Greddy's RX-8 bolt-on turbo kit. https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=55675&stc=1 Everything was dandy until I read this part https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=55677&stc=1 "WTF?!" I thought for a moment. At first I thought these guys were advertising flywheel figures -until I looked at the stock torque rating. Even my punny stock 8 puts down 130 something ft-lbs of torque to the WHEELS. But then, only something like 179whp. My question then, Greddy....did your marketing dpt. got slightly 'confused' while typing up the ad? Would someone care to enlighten me on this one, or is it yet proof that all manufacturers are full of it? |
Where's the guy with the "Bullshit" flag?!
202.2 HP? WTF?! That's definitely not the hp claim from Mazda and no way is that the power at the Wheels... Where'd they get that number?? |

does gredy mention the dyno in the add? |
somebody in this forum did make 200+hp stock and Greddy took that number and ran with it. It is by no means representative of average whp for most people but hey, they can't be accused of making it up now, can they? It does suck when an aftermarket company fluff up their product; just look at k&n intake, it's advertised to give you a guaranteed +9hp but you and I know its horsesh!t...

Why are you so bent out of shape over this? For one, it would make Greddy look better if they did start with the lower hp numbers that most of you guys have been gettin on dynos. They didn't. Oooohh..."the published figure is 10 lb ft off from my car"
So what? |
good point. they used a high number to start. i fthey had used 185 instead the increase from thei r turbo would look much beter from a marketing standpoint
|
TX is that Marietta8's dyno?

So what? And its not only 10 lb-ft over my car...its like 20hp higher. Heck, I'll buy their test-mule engine if its still usable -or ever existed.... And besides....c'mon, that ad is pure bs. Are you gonna argue that now? |

Ultimately if you don't believe them or any of the claims on this board it's your privilage to not buy it.
I never said anything about claims being made on this or any other board. I am not questioning what greddy kit adopters have achieved or not. Like I said, I question the sales strategy.... |

And you said an RX-8 would have to breath very well up high with that low of a torque figure when I just showed with a maximum torque figure like that it wouldn't make that much HP at 8200 RPM.

Since the RX-8 actually does make around 238 hp at the crank, it is safe to assume that it would make power around the 200 hp mark or in the ballpark at the wheels. Greddy's kit is capable of making about 260 rwhp. I don't see the problem. The biggest issue we see everyday is that people believe dyno numbers for a car that alters the engine management system when it's on a dyno. This car does NOT dyno accurately. This still doesn't explain where Greddy got that number but it is a believable number. If they advertised 300+ then we'd know they were lying.

Why not? It's right in line with what everyone else is gaining from an added horsepower perspective.

https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=55825&stc=1 I can't say anything about the torque curve that the turbo version would create, but I know darn well that a stock engine DOES NOT breath all that great after 7K5rpms. The chart I posted assumes that the engine produces a flat torque curve equal to peak torque. Now, is that realistic on the turbo version? How would I know! Is that realistic on a stock motor? NO. Am I questioning the absolute numbers? YES (albeit, we don't know correction, yada yada yada) Do the stock numbers look fabricated (and badly at that?) YES. |
Seriously dude....why are you so hell bent on making a huge deal about this? I don't see the point.....so the Greddy marketing guys picked out some numbers....big deal...we all know how the kit works....geez...relax man....
|
stock hp starts dropping at 8500. turbo should as drop after 7ish since they are dropping the boost off after that

seriously though this is some MAJOR nitpicking, what matters is the end result of the greddy kit is 100% accurate and their advertisement is 100% legit. people with dyno's have PROVEN it. in fact the stock power varies so much and is so debatable its a lose-lose situation in terms of pleasing you for putting down accurate stock numbers. the car dynos 175-200 horsepower for christ sake, and like rg says, the car simply cannot dyno correctly due to ems being altered on the dyno. anyway

Second, I respect RG a lot, I admire him, but I don't think the RX-8 is trickier to dyno correctly than any other new car on the street nowadays. Have you dyno'ed your car? I have, I got my results, and I didn't limp back home or anything remotely close to that. Are we going to start the debate about the whole HP rating again? I thought that was really a dead issue. |
There was a dyno run in Seattle...dmp was there, I'm not sure who did it but somebody got over 200 hp to the wheels.
So believe it. And go on with your life ;) |

There were MULTIPLE PEOPLE from RX8club.com AT THE DYNO!
You think it's a conspiracy or something? :p |
Don't be surprised if more and more 8's dyno close or at 200whp. The first cars to be dynoed were 2004 models that were running pig rich with dsc&tcs on.
