Because the rotary kind of acts like a 2-stroke, some racing leagues and also some countries classify it as a 2.6 (2x1.3 since it has twice as many power strokes per rotation of the shaft as a piston engine).

In the other countries besides the US, they released a V6 version of the car. Although, no longer dubbed the "RX-8" it is the CX-8"...
