1.6L Rotary for the next RX7?

I don't know if this is news but I was flipping through a euro car mag (I believe it was "evo") It said that Mazda was developing a 1.6L Wankel Rotary engine to be used in a 2010 or 2011 RX7. The target was 300hp. Don't know if we will ever see the 7 again but the engine development seemed interesting.

legendkurado 07-09-2007 05:38 PM

serious?

salveya 07-09-2007 05:55 PM

Sweet, my lease is done in 2011. Bigger rotary to replace the rotary I am growing to love.

lesper4 07-09-2007 06:05 PM

its funny how all these rummors are all round the same numbers. wont happen, i would be more inclined to find out if there will be a 4th-5th year rx-8. this is about the time when all the other rotaries stoped production.

chinx 07-09-2007 06:55 PM

the same rumor was supposedly published in automobile. most likely rumors, tho if you look at mazda's concept cars, i'd say close to half of them lead to, or at least resemble, some production models. so what i'd be realistically interested in is a rotary coupe based on the kabura

77mjd 07-09-2007 07:03 PM

I think one thing that can be agreed on is there will be some form of the Kabura out in the next few years. What will be under the hood is still anyones guess. But there is no way that new rotary engine they are supposedly working on will have 300hp, unless there is some forced induction. If that engine does not end up in the Kabura, there could be something else in the pipeline for it that nobody has seen yet.

 12.5 mpg is what I get now. 95% street driven. I don't care though still love my car.

12.5mpg FTW

I read the same in latest issue of automobile. Word is that Mazda is working on an RX7 16C rotary (1.6L) that pushes 300hp with "25% more displacement than the RX8." Article states that; "In spite of flagging interest in the RX8 (new 2006 models are still avaliable with a $3,000 discount), Mazda hasn't abandoned hope for the Wankel power."

Easy_E1 07-09-2007 08:48 PM

Yawn. :fruit:

turok4n64 07-09-2007 10:00 PM

interesting...but i wont ever be getting rid of my rx8, its so pretty

ScottyStyles 07-09-2007 10:01 PM

I'd pick one up, probably via lease, if the rumors are true... especially if the rumors of 300+ hp without forced induction are true.

Of course, "One point three liter piston eater" flows and sounds a lot better than "One point six liter piston eater". Not that I'd complain, mind you... just saying it would ruin my favorite phrase about the car. :-p

im also begining to grow to dig rotaries
becos with a few sensible mods its really quick believe it or not i've done 0-100 in 4.8s only with the following;

Mods that contribute to improving acceleration - NA JDM

-catless midpipe
-MS flywheel
-KNN filter
-lightweight rims (8.2kg)
-coilovers (hard setting)
-MS muffler (dont know if this did anything for the car, cos it already came with it, but its a mod nevertheless)

mysql101 07-09-2007 10:07 PM

I'd say a 1.6 flows better than a 1.3 :D

Sorry, but no one here is going to believe that with those mods, you're doing 0-62 in 4.8.

Post a timeslip.. otherwise, it didn't happen.

mysql101 07-10-2007 08:43 AM

you might be able to get 4.8 with FI, but no way NA.
