Wth?!

i just changed my oil and i put in 3 3/4 qrts of oil and when i check the level its showing me min. oil... and yes i started the car up after the change no leaks everything was fine, let the car run for like 5 min and then i turned the car off and let it cool for 5 min.

any ideas? lol

put more oil in?

the 8 has more than 4 quarts running through the oil coolers etc, so you probably just drained out more than you expected

MazdaRX-8SPEED 06-10-2010 03:12 PM

probably.. i just added more and im letting it run right now. and i did tilt the car to drain more oil out... oops. ill check after the warm up and ill report back.. thanks :)

Funny thing is, I just had my oil change and after checking the oil it was half a quart from full.

MazdaRX-8SPEED 06-10-2010 04:07 PM

omg this is a little weird. i just added 4 qrts of oil and its barley half way lol

8 Maniac 06-10-2010 04:16 PM

I hope you dont mean 4 more quarts...

MazdaRX-8SPEED 06-10-2010 04:50 PM

yea i put 7 total qrts... no i put in a total of 4 1/4 qrts lol

8 Maniac 06-10-2010 05:01 PM

Just making sure... you never know sometimes. I've seen dumber things happen. I definitely would not add more than that. What year is your car?

bose 06-10-2010 05:04 PM

What's the question? The 8 with oil filter is 3.7 quarts now the oil coolers are holding at least a quart each.

How's your aim? Is it all going down the filler neck?

MazdaRX-8SPEED 06-10-2010 06:34 PM

i have an 04. yea i went to AZ and asked and they told me 3.7 grts. but i put a little over 4 qrts. and still didnt top it, but this is the highest im going. lol

bose 06-11-2010 09:37 AM

Just keep an eye on it the next few days, you should be fine as long as there's no leaks and it's above the low mark.

No, not OOPS. Draining out more of the old oil is a good thing. The entire oil system can hold something like 7-7.5 quarts. A normal drain only drains out 3.7 quarts officially, though it can change depending on how much you have burned off. Tilting the car to get more out of the oil coolers is something I do all the time, and I usually re-fill with about 4.5 quarts.

You are doing the right thing.

You can also get a Pela Pump to pump out the oil via suction through the dip stick, and that supposedly removes roughly 6 to 6.5 quarts.

But yeah, always check for leaks. :)

So, because a computer somewhere told you an inaccurate number, and you used that number, and your engine physically indicates that it is not enough, you are not going to finish the job and put in the amount of oil your engine physically needs. Because it is too far from the number you were originally given, so it cannot be accurate. Right?

Just wanted to clear that up before I posted picard.jpg

Running low on oil can "blow shit up". Running a little too much oil won't do jack shit...worst case it'll blow some through the vent tubes into the intake tube. Of course it's best to run the correct amount per the dipstick, but if I had to choose between running a quart low and a quart over, I'd run over all day long. Maybe that's just my weird logic though. :dunno:

lol !!!!!:Peace:

but seriously, what sup with "common sense" these days ...

zoom44 06-12-2010 10:12 AM

holy hell. im just gonna close this thread and say this- measure the oil that came out and you'll know how much to put in. even then need to check the dipstick to see if its full. a quart over is NOTHING to worry about a quart under IS.
