wOW SMALL FRONT WINDOW
 

HEY guys im a soon to be owner and i drive my mums buick rondevous or however u spell it. i love it its a beast!!! but i finally got to sit in the rx8 today and i noticed that the window is a little close together and not very wide. is it just im used to driving monster suv's or is it just a bit small. thanks for ur help srry for my terrible internet typing.

The front window is fine. So is the rear window. What is small are the rear side windows, it's difficult to see when changing lanes if anyone is in your blind spot.

I agree that the front window isn't tiny, but I have had on multiple occasions a car hiding in my front right blind spot at an intersection. (hiding behind the A pillar) I almost ran into somebody once because of it. Now I duck and lean my head one way or the other just to make sure.. anybody else have this problem?

The 8 definitely has some blind spots, especially if you are vertically challenged. It's not unusual in a lot of new cars. Because of the styling (forward cabin which is really just forward windshield), the thickness of the A piilars to incorporate air bags and the location of the side mirrors, alot of cars now have front blind spots in addition to the right side C pillar we are all familiar with. In the 8 I find that I lean forward before initiatating turns in intersections to make sure that there is no side traffic.

Magixpuma - the Buick Rendezvous has one of the most forward windshields ever put on a vehicle. The dashboard is so deep and the A pillars are so far into the field of view the NHTSA should ban the vehicle from the highways. Might as well just paint the sides of the windshield black. The blind spots in the front of that are the worst. Everything on the 8 is smaller but you'll get used to it quickly. It's a drivers car, not a family room on wheels like you're accustomed to.

I worry about it too while on the highway. Guess I'll have to lean forward and look in the side mirrors and sideways.

Agreed, the RX-8 has blind spots that require getting used to, as with many sport cars. In my humble opinion however, these ain't squat compared to those of a 350Z. One of the contibuting factors which kept me from buying the Z was the ungodly blind spots. At least in the RX-8, you CAN see if you move your head a little and position your mirrors right. In the Z, I'd probably need a wingman.

Yeah, sometimes the 'A" pillar and windshield mounted rear-view mirror conspire to block the appearance of cars at the right at an intersection, or cars merging onto the roadway from an entrance ramp. Maybe more of a problem with tall people?

I guess it's one of the byproducts of the currently popular high beltline school of design. It does feel a little claustrophobic compared to my '85 RX7.

I was totally put off by the view of the rear windshield in my mirror!

I thought the same thing but I did finally find out that the mirror is double hinged so it does move up and give you more windshield room

Well too late now :D I'm getting my 8 and I ain't letting go of it. After all the wait and finally getting the exact 8 I wanted, you think I'm going to give it up! :p

Yes! I would have had an accident yesterday getting on the freeway except that I decided not to change lanes. Seconds later, a car appeared in my side-view (driver's side) from thin air. I am careful, I LOOK back every time I change lanes (learned that in driver's ed, and it took) and there was no car there...it was just lurking in the spot behind the rear side window. I adjusted my mirrors, and just look more carefully now...whew!

(Preaching Section) Note to all drivers: be aware when you may be lurking in somebody's blind spot. I think that if I had an accident, I would have been just a little mad that the person wan't careful to stay out of that "danger zone". Not everybody even checks before changing lanes. Drive defensively!

Please read this over. Most owner were able to elminate almost of the bindspot with the method described in this thread.

I just make sure Im going faster than everyone else. Then when I pass them I know they are not creeping up into my blindspot.

I thought they seemed quite a bit bigger than the side windows in my TT but then again I'm not driving an SUV.

I recall there being a lot of greenhouse in the 8 when I drove it too.

I'm assuming the referenced thread explains that you want to set your side-view mirrors widely so that you cover the blind spot. I can do that sufficiently using the controls for the driver's side (left in the US) mirror. However, try as I may, there is no way to set the right-hand side-view mirror wide enough to avoid a very neat "perfectly-car-sized" blind spot on the right side of the car. I can watch it happen; a car comes up and I can follow "him" until his rear fender is gone from view in the rear-view mirror. At that precise instant, if it's a short enough car, there is no view of "his" front end in the right-hand side-view mirror. If you wait a few seconds, probably the time required for "his" advance relative to your own car to be roughly a yard (or meter). Then you can see the front end of the approaching car. I've found that cocking the passenger's side seat forward a bit, to give me a clear line of sight through the entirety of the back passenger side window is my best defense. I'm 6'1" tall - no giant but far from short. Now I guess I'll go read the referenced link to make sure it says what I assume it does.... :)

to bad they dont put a rear veiw tv right into the middle of the steering wheel i say that should almost be a common thing by now

Yup, I've had my 8 for only five weeks now and almost changed lanes into someone I didn't see in my blind spot. I'm pretty careful too and was taught to look over my shoulders before changing lanes. Both cars seemed to appear out of no where; I'm still wondering if they changed lanes into my blind spot.


It's a concern when I have a passenger and they move their seat back so it blocks my the view out my passenger side rear window. I'll try the mirror adjustments at the site linked in an earlier post, but if that doesn't work, a small apex mirror for my driver's side and just more care when changing lanes to the right.

I love the small windows! But find it really difficult to reach drive-thru windows...lol

LOL!!! Too funny! :D :D It reminds me of the scene in "Gumball Rally" when the Italian driver of the Ferrari rips off the rear-view and says, "first lesson in Italian driving: what's behind you, is NOT important!"
