Would you recommend rx8 to me?

Hey everyone. Just like the title says. I currently have a 3rd gen rx7 and it's my only car. I was thinking of getting another car because I dont wanna rack up too many miles on my FD. So what I am looking for is something like Honda Civic. Something reliable and fun to drive. should I consider rx8? Are there any problems with these cars like rx7s?

dupa12345 03-13-2006 10:29 PM

looks like there are plenty of deals for 05 acccords

if you like the 7 rx8 is soo much better .. i guess .. didnt own a 7 :)

Two posts to check before someone flames you for not searching!

The Tech Garage -> Issues and problems (keep in mind two things. People report problems, not the lack of problems. Most issues were early 2004 issues and have been solved)

RX-8 Discussion -> The little things -> lots of things to love.

Short answer, Yes!

Edit: As a former Civic owner; unless you buy the new Si don't buy the Civic unless you want any enthusiasm for driving slowly sucked out of you. My '98 was the least engaging car I have ever owned.

Detrich 03-13-2006 10:33 PM

depends. what's your budget? both the '06 civic si and '05 rx-8 run low 20's if u can find a deal. i think the rx-8 should be more reliable than the FD since it doesn't have the turbos. it's still a rotary though. do u have the willpower to resist the urge to mod it? <lol>

Renesis_8 03-13-2006 10:33 PM

If you can maintain a FD RX-7 and keep it running, maintaining an RX-8 will be nothing for you. Err, how is a Honda Civic fun to drive? Maybe.. MAYBE the SI. If you have the money, go for the RX-8, better mileage than your FD, and its a rotary! I thought once you buy a rotary you'll never go back to boingers? Come on, get the 8, its perfect for you!

I've never owned, driven or even ridden in an RX-7. But that still wouldn't stop me from hands down recommending an RX-8. Go test drive one. That should tell you most of what you need to know.

Why not racking up miles on your FD?

Japan8 03-13-2006 11:44 PM

Are you looking for a daily commuter with good gas mileage, supposed good reliability and lastly some "fun to drive" factor? If so, then maybe the 8 isn't for you. I personally have a strong dislike for Honda, but the new Civic Si is supposed to be more engaging than the last gen Civics. I personally find the exterior styling dull (looks like an electric car) and hate the new split-level dash. I also think it's too expensive. I'd get an RSX instead if we're talking Honda. HOWEVER... if sports car gas mileage is ok and you want a lot of "fun to drive" factor, then the 8 is your car. Test drive them and see how they feel to you.

You should get a RX8

Most of us here love our cars, but none of us here know you.

Like DarkBrew, I suggest you read as many of the STICKY threads as your time allows and test-drive one. I'm sure there are several considerations beyond the simple 'daily driver' that would affect your decision:

Can you live with ~18-19mpg?
How much do you want 4dr/4seats instead of 2dr/4seats or 2dr/2seats?
Do you like the RX-8 body style?
Do you like rotary engines?
Have you gotten insurance quotes for all of the cars you are considering?

You should test drive the RX-8. It is a much more refined car than the FD and extremely smooth running. Handling is excellent as is, but a few suspension mods can make it outstanding. I also drive a 2nd gen RX-7 N/A, mostly for track days, and the RX-8 is an entirely different animal.

Of course, the RX-8 has some of the same idiosyncracies of the ealier rotary-engined Mazdas. Flooding and poor fuel mileages are probably the two most reported problems with this car, although there have been some others. Search and read.

The flooding problem has pretty much been eliminated in the latest model year cars by the upgraded starter motors, batteries and plugs. You still would not want to tempt fate by shutting one down cold, but the likelihood of flooding a Renesis engine are low.

Fuel mileages reported on this forum have ranged from very poor, like 12 mpg or so, to within EPA estimates. Seems to depend to a great extent on the type of driving one does. Lots of stop and go traffic with significant idling time seems to result in very poor mileages. Highway mileages at cruising speeds should be around 20, plus or minus about 3-4 mpg.

In my opinion, if you're going to use this car as your daily commuter car, you may want to consider some other options. After all, you already own what is probably the most fun car ever built, so you really don't need another one. :hahano:

Before I bought my RX8 I test drove the Civic SI because I was considering it.

The SI is nice car but there were some things I did not care for.
- The dashboard
- Cheap interior materials

If you want a daily driver - go with the civic but if you have a second car go with the 8.

rx8wannahave 03-16-2006 11:31 AM

YES...YES I WOULD! Get an 8 and while you won't be sipping gas, you will still be driving a rotary daily.

If you're looking for the reliability of a Civic and would even make the comparison between it and an 8 my guess is that the 8 is not the right car for you. By the way, what kind of name is Accord lover for an FD owner? I do presently own an FD and an 8 and I love the 8, for what that's worth.
Paul.

A friend told me that he saw on some car review car and driver something aloong those lines, they said it responded so well it was almost like driving a porche. I never test drove the civic though, just the wrx and the rx8 before buying. Got the rx8, i'm gonna suggest it, but also i suggest the test drive.

rodrigo67 03-16-2006 01:29 PM

Another car comes to mind from your stated wants.

You seem to want a car thats reliable like a honda but also fun to drive. I'm not usre if gas milage is an issue, but I'm not sure if the RX8 is what your looking for.

It's great handling, comfort, and decent power, but if your coming from an FD, the power might let you down. Coming from an accord...well you don't get much more reliable then honda, and if your coming from a 4 door then the RX8 might seem small inside. If your using it as a daily driver, gas milage might not be what your expecting.

Take one for a test drive, but you may want to consider an RSX-s or a TSX, which seems a little more of what your describing...

yiksing 03-16-2006 11:11 PM

You need an Accord Type-R, Skyline Coupe G35

Accord lover 03-16-2006 11:49 PM

I used to own an Accord and FD and thought I dont need two cars. So I sold my Accord but having 4 door 5 seater as a daily driver was really nice. I dont know, i might go with TSX since my heart is still with Honda but who knows right?
