would YOU buy and rx-8 if...

if they instead threw the new motor that they put in the speed3/6 in the rx-8?

i used to own a 04 rx-8, bought it brand new. dumb perchase at the time for me considering the horrrrrible gas milage and expensive payments.. but anyway ... i got $$ again to spend and ijust wish they had that motor in the 8 instead! i know rotory nuts would hate it but id deff buy one :)

i havnt checked this site out in 4ever, thier isnt nay new big changes or turbo comming to the 8 soon is thier?

N rider89 01-26-2007 01:41 AM

no way. there are many other cars i would rather have if the rx8 didnt have a rotary.

it just makes the car special.

This questions pops up almost like clockwork.

Somewhere in the depths of a volcano a cult gathers around a gigantic clock as it ticks downward. Everytime the clock reaches zero a new apocalyte has to log onto rx8club and start a "Would you buy a RX-8 if it had a (insert piston engine type here)" thread. I'm waiting for Mazda's anti-anti-rotary team to find this cult. Until then, we'll have to live in fear of their regular e-attacks.

RotaryP7 01-26-2007 02:01 AM

Well, depends.. I guess..

ken-x8 01-26-2007 02:30 AM

No.

But if they put in a Le Rhone rotary instead of a Renesis rotary, I'd take a really close look.

Stavesacre21 01-26-2007 03:45 AM

better yet...why not call it a MS6 or MS3?!!

yea, that's the ticket...

:suspect:

NoTears316 01-26-2007 05:28 AM

What if Mazda put the engine in the back seat, and if you actually wanted to drive it, you had to install the engine yourself? Would you buy it then? What if you had to sleep with someone of the same sex in order to get it working... would you do it?

New Yorker 01-26-2007 05:31 AM

Moot point. Remember, the Renesis is a tiny engine—less than 13.5" tall! An ordinary engine is too tall, too long and too heavy—that unique near mid-engine "feel" would be gone.

And I get 19 or 20 mpg. Not great, but certainly not horrible. For the feel and handling I get, that's a small price to pay.

If you would ditch the rotor why stay with a Mazda piston engine when a Corvette motor can be had for a little more if not the same?

A 3-rotor would be nice.

Easy_E1 01-26-2007 05:56 AM

I bought the car for the ROTARY. The car they put it in is a big bonus.

Krankor 01-26-2007 06:02 AM

The better question would be: what cars would you consider buying if they pulled the piston engine *out* and put in a renesis instead. I still think a rotary Miata would be pretty cool...

RoXanneBlack8 01-26-2007 06:24 AM

lotus exige with a renesis engine....that is the perfect car.

o crap, no one do it before i do!!!!!!!!!

WantedTwo 01-26-2007 06:30 AM

I've sugested that to a guy that I work with that owns an elise... he thinks I'm nuts, probibly cause he doesnt understand.

NotAPreppie 01-26-2007 06:58 AM

I think at that point, I'd probably look at a SKY Redline or Solstice GXP. And then come back to my 8 for the hardtop and four seats.

For all the "I bought this car because of the rotary" fans. If they put the Rotary in a pontiac Aztec, would you buy one then?

I bought the car because it handled, I didn't care what engine is in it. I got rid of it because of the rotary, so if they drop a 2.3 turbo making 300hp, I would definitely get another one.

For for all the weight watchers, they should take a look at the 2.3...it's pretty small ( not much bigger then the renesis). Move a few things like the battery to the trunk and it wouldn't be too hard to keep the 50/50 weight.

rotary crazy 01-26-2007 07:33 AM

nope, bought it because it has a rotary in it, if the aztec had a rotary in it I buy that too to take the engine out, that POS doest deserve a rotary

the aztec reference isn't entirely appropriate. we bought a well balanced, great handling sports car with a rotary engine. i wouldn't buy an SUV with a rotary just for the sake of buying a rotary. however, had it been a sedan that had a rotary, i would seriously consider trading in my accord for one.

the rotary is a unique and highly efficient work of art that (and now i'm just going to sound corny) is truly the heart of the 8 and all rotaries that preceded it. without it you still have a great handling car that looks good but it isn't an 8 and i don't know that it would have been enough to have me buy it over a 3, 6, or anything else.

A 3 rotor lexus IS 350 :ylsuper:

DaveCM203 01-26-2007 07:59 AM

Without the rotory it would lose it's appeal. Now with a 3 rotor, we might be talking.

I agree with you as well, I bought the car for the way it drives and handles. I honestly don't really care whats under the hood. If I can get the same performance from a piston car I'd buy that, but I have yet to experience that in a car under $30k that has the same feel and balance of the 8.

Inspite of the rotary being a great engine by design, I don't it see being around for more time with high gas prices and more ever tightening emission controls.

I will definetely look forward to a n 8 with corvette motor. The 2.3L o well don't know about that.

TwinTurbo2800,

This question is very simple. The majority of us love the 8 for what it is. A gas dringing oil burning fun machine. There was somthing about the 8 that you didn't like that made you post this question. That means you didn't like somthing about the 8. That means you are not a true 8 enthusiast. The rotory in the 8 is its soul, and the styling is what makes it different. Its ok though because like said many times the 8 isn't for everyone. To answer your question, I would not buy the 8 if it didn't have the rotory.

I will be the first to tell you, I didn't like the 8 when I first looked at it. After I drove it that little smile in the front grill really had charictor after the first drive.

DaveCM203 01-26-2007 10:31 AM

To me how smooth and free reving the rotory is makes the car to a large point. The S2000 was fun but never had the smooth feel of the 8. If you want to get an idea of an 8 without the Wankel, go drive an S2000. I am in love with my car. I love the way it looks, drives, handles, but that wankel is just the heart and sole of the car.

HondaGoldWingRider 01-26-2007 10:33 AM

I would NEVER own another RX8 or any Mazda vehicle. I am absolutely through with them when I get rid of this POS.
