Why are so many RX8's being sold used ? ?

I find this really strange but if you check ebay there are about 15 of them for sale plus some of the classifieds' here you will find a bunch and the weird thing is, they don't seem to be selling either.

What is the story behind this ... can people not afford the car anymore or some just don't want it ? ?

I've seen people selling almost new cars before but the 8 really seems to be in abundance ...

I don't think you need to worry about those people. If it's financial problems, baby coming in, etc., I personally wouldn't see it as a problem. Our RX-8 is far from dying off :).

Some people just want the latest toy. They get something, get bored, and quickly get something else. If you've watched this forum over the past year, you saw it happen to quite a few members.

the problem is, the car is inexpensive. for only a few thousand more you get a brand new car. That is why I bought mine new rather than used. Not to mention loans are a lot easier for a new car.

AF-RX8 07-22-2004 11:04 AM

I can understand some people having a financial problem but ebay constantly has a whole bunch of RX8's on it . . . for a quick comparison there are only 4 Acura 2004 TL's

Though I also checked the 350Z and there are over 60 of them ... it kinda sucks because if we were to ever try and sell our RX8 on ebay it wouldn't get that much since like Jason pointed out, it is not that much more to get a new one.

So what the heck is the right price for a used one then ... I would guess $22 to $24k ...

I think a good number of these people were turned off by the fuel economy. Many people didnt know what they were getting into.

i didnt buy this car for the mpg but i would bet that 75%on the owners do not get the mpg the sticker said

Lawerence 07-22-2004 11:54 AM

after a year and 20K miles yea $22-24K seems right.

Umm, aren't alot of listings on E-Bay from dealerships?

Dr. Rx 07-22-2004 06:36 PM

I also think the ones on Ebay are mostly from dealerships

mysql101 07-22-2004 06:43 PM

Considering the number of RX-8's sold, the amount being sold used on ebay and other locations is hardly worth mentioning.

Also some of those peeps are trading in for the 2005

Unless they had one of the crappy mileage early versions of the car, that would be beyond stupid.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that mazda simply made too many for the first year. The car is selling, but is still way behind the amounts brought to US. It tends to make you think car isn't doing so well, when it may be as simple as too high of expectations. Dealers selling this car used on ebay indicates an early trade in, which is from disappointed or regretful buyers who changed their minds. With today's gas prices, it's understandable why people bailed very early on this car. Mazda will reduce quantity in 2005, and it should keep this car on a better selling pace.

mysql101 07-22-2004 07:15 PM

The car isn't for everyone, but I see far more stories of people captivated and left in awe by it after the first test drive, then I do people who felt the car was so horrible it was necessary to dump it after only a few months of ownership...

Right about now, some have had it for well over a year, which should naturally result in more used cars being on the market.

I don't think we can draw any definitive conclusions, especially with Mazda appearing to be happy with the results.

I also think the people that have waited for the end of year sales are starting to buy and those that want to try to capture some of that market are putting there 8 up for sale to see what they might get.I pass my dealer everyday and the lot has been very full of eights BUT this week mazda ran an add here for 3500 rebate on all mazda cars and the lot is about wiped out. A lot of people wait. Also a lot of people only keep a car for a year then move on.

Maybe they were buying the 250HP version, only to be offended when Mazda changed the flash to make the CAT last longer. Then, they took the $500 and free maintenance, drove for a while, and now they are parting their ways.

The car is going to work, so if the price is right on a used one, I would buy another - even off E-Bay, but buyer beware on E-Bay - it might be a stealership you are talking to. I'm waiting for Racing Beat to fix the maps so I can have the best of both Worlds: my $500/free maintenance, AND Jim's restored HP from RB.

The car I dreamed about all those months…

You guys also forget the group that just has a bad taste in their mouth so having one is bittersweet. After two accidents and my wife that complains about the seats every time she gets in...its over for me. As much as I love this car I have to move on. Not to say that I wont take the rotary path again in the future (ie a turbocharged model), my 2004 will be traded in and be seen on ebay before the end of the year.
