Did you know that JDM spec cars have a taller 3rd gear - takes you to about 100ish mph which is perfect for drag racing . I trapped at 100mph just before I hit the rev cut .

No, I seem to be one of only a select few guys talking about it. If you know more than me, jump right in and contribute any time, and don't get butthurt if I disagree with you. It's just because I like talking about it and I'll take the time to tell you what I'm thinking.

On a roll, I've been fine with some of the "faster" cars mentioned here, but not if I see anything south of 7000rpm - normally achieveable to stay there if you shift at fuel cut-off rather than redline. Still not a super fast car, but certainly entertaining.

Technically you're correct, but many cars can suffer from gearing and 0-60, quarter mile and other measurements. The RX8 is sitting pretty at the top its power band crossing 60 mph. Are you saying that we can't compare 0-60 times because the RX8 has an unfair advantage? No. Trapspeed in quarter mile is used because it's a readily available measurement to standardize performance across all cars. You have to put a stake in the ground somewhere, and it's the best one we have. Suggest another one...

No kidding... Seems they would make it same here just to get a little more out of the quarter for the US market.

/\ yeah - I had a big argument with MM about it a couple of years ago . It does seem strange they would do that though .

HAHA Just took a look at it... really good thread. that's the way to discuss something and get to the bottom of it.

YaXMaNGTO has always said it like it is.
He's also helped contributing good information on countless threads.

And yet, this board still has a "you're either with me or against me" mentality when it comes to other members disagreeing on one specific topic...

And ragging on another person's vehicle is a thoughtless and classless rebuttal. If you have a difference in opinion, then express it in a rational fashion.

And oh, again the OP was talking about straight line speed, so try to stay on topic. BTW, the RX-8 is fairly slow in straight line when it comes to sports cars. And oh, I own a RX-8.

He wasn't being disrespectful, right?

Then I notice that someone in a Pontiac SUV is in the other lane, revving it for all it's worth and staying even with me.

Now, I didn't even have the throttle halfway in. But this asshat in a Pontiac SUV obviously thought he was racing me. I don't race, I don't do hard launches on the street, etc., but now some guy thinks his SUV is as fast as my 8.

So there you go. We all know that the 8 is a bit underpowered (for a sports car) and that it is at a disadvantage in straight line acceleration because of the lack of low-down torque. But the 8 isn't slow, and it has always mystified my why any teen in a fartcan Civic thinks their car is fast and an 8 is slow.

Now I know why. Anyone else have someone "race" you like this?

All the time.... I was on the freeay this weekend just driving at the speed of traffic I had a G35 (very nice looking one I must say, all blacked out) racing me and I didn't even know it. I drove by him (with the speed of traffic mind you
) and checked out his clean looking ride. I noticed his girl looking at my 8 and I noticed him pretending not to notice it. Then a minute later I hear this sorry excuse for an engine so I look out my window and sure enough he thought we were racing. They are doing a ton of repaving work on I-80 where I live and there is one section where the road curves for about a 1/4 mile and it's very bumpy right now as they are getting ready to pave. I smiled at his girl and stepped on it while my 8 handled the bumpy corner like it was on rails and he didn't even try. When we got back to the smooth road I got into the slow lane getting ready to exit and he drove by me at like 80mph like he was now "the winner". Wow......

In general, Mustangs GT's are the worst. 9/10 times when I get a "race invite" I just look over and smile and when the light goes green I just mind my own beeswax and watch them take off like a snail out of hell. Then I laugh at them at the next light. It's a great way to piss people off.

Yeah, I wonder why though. It'll likely help your turbo's trap, not sure it'll help a stock 8. I think our 8's have the shorter gear to help it's 0-60 and 1/4 miles times that are everthing to North Americans...see other comments in this thread.

The 8 is the perfect candidate for shorter ratios or even a nice 7 speed. With a powerband as narrow as the two strokes I used to ride, the shorter the better.

Yeah, thanks for correcting my behaviour, now if I just gave a shit...

I guess I should be thankful to Yax for another dozen posts describing how high a GTO traps, which has nothing to do with this thread. But again, as if I gave a shit.

Classless? A GTO IS a pig. It's a nice car for sure, but any enthusiast would describe it as grossly overweight and everything that comes with that.

ra990 09-08-2009 09:00 PM

This one time I was on a narrow one-lane road (2 sides, one lane each) and it was late at night. This car is heading towards me on the opposite side except it keeps swerving in and out of my lane...I'm thinking this guy is probably drunk. Then he swerves to the other side (shoulder) and in order to correct really steers hard and loses control. He is going about 60mph, and heading straight for me head on in my lane (still swerving a bit in and out)! I have an AT 2006 Shinka in Copper Red which I love to death...I put the shifter in manual mode and drop two gears, floor it and drive right around him. Had I been any slower or hesitated for a second, I'm pretty sure I'd be dead or at the very least my car totaled. The car drove off the road and crashed through the fence on my side of the road.

So...the point I am trying to make is that the 8 was fast enough when I needed it to be and probably saved my life.

NoRotorNoMotor 09-08-2009 09:25 PM

The RX8 ISN'T Fast !!!!!
AND THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT !!!!!

ARE YOU FAST???????????????

THE RX8 Rewards the driver that is willing to learn !!!!

This car will not win "races" for you - you must win them yourself.

That is why It is a pure sports car.
And one of the best cars on the planet.

Some idiot "winning" a race by merely stomping his foot to the floor - or letting his PATHETIC "smg" tranny do the work IS NOT DRIVING.

Ohhh and don't even get me started on the lame ass 370 "downshifting" for you.

PATHETIC !!!

Keep up the good work Mazda - your one of the last true car companies left.

.

don't think so - the shorter 3rd gear is more of a disadvantage over the 1/4 due to the extra shift you need to make .

SleepeR1st 09-08-2009 09:42 PM

For me, the rx8 has plenty of power for the type of driving i do - mountain and backroad country driving. It's a momentum car, it rewards you for driving smoothly and effortlessly around corners.

:suspect:True on the one of the best sports car part but I have yet to see the point if the thread says why people think the 8 is slow and people describe their experience in different situations and you talk down on the auto tranny....LMAO

:dunno: Are you just explaining why the rx8 is the way it is and it simply depends on the driver or.............

RufusVonStorm 09-09-2009 04:39 PM

They are pretty slow in a straight line especially from a dig and even from a roll. I knew a guy once who got beat by V6 Camry and V6 Accord, though not on the same day. Heck, even turbo-diesel dualie trucks and the DHL van could give him a run for the money. About dead even with a 330i and Cayenne S.

8upbad 09-09-2009 04:52 PM

OMG I am getting tired of this thread already. Comparing the 8 to anything in a straight line is stupid. And saying that our car is slow is stupid. Compared to what?! If you want a fast car, save up and get a Lambo or a ferarri like every other lame rich person. I bought my 8 for the platform. It has good balance and good looks and great potential. Remember, you can make a Ford Escort a fast car. Personally I prefer to laugh at idiots who buy an SRT-4 and think they're hot shit. Yeah you can go fast but what really matters? If you say straights then more power to you... don't buy an 8. If you like real racing that involves skills on every level (i.e. turning, shifting, dealing with traffic, braking, AND straight lines) then the 8 is a good choice, maybe even great.
LoL RufusVonStorm, are you saying a V6 Accord is as fast as a Cayenne S? Bro....

Mmhm. They'd probably trap about the same. Cayenne is the big heavy SUV thing, not talking about the cayman

Uhm the cayenne S would be a very close race to an accord, they are slow. MY friend had one with full exhaust (he traded it in for a SRT8 jeep, great choice) and it was slow. I can easily see it losing to an accord V6. They only got like 340hp and they weigh so much

Got RufusVonStorm talking about trapspeed (brings a tear to my eye)... myriad of different cars being mentioned and compared... other folks trying to start shit... everybody debating and presenting their point of view.
