Cleaning the MAF sensor did nothing.
I saw a line of black stuff around the throttle blade, I'm going to try to clean this later today with some carb cleaner with the engine running but I'm not entirely sure how to do this with the MAF sensor and the rubber accordion tube detached. I will search the forums and see if anyone else has used this method and report back with however I end up cleaning and whether it fixes the issue. Also, yeah I haven't seafoamed it yet. |

I cleaned the inside of the throttle body. It still stalled out (93F outside, driving for 15 mins and coming to a stop light), but it does idle better after cleaning it out.
I cleaned it by taking the four bolts holding the TB on and spraying carb cleaner on a shop towel and wiping the black stuff off by hand. Here are some pics before and after (first two are before, last two are after cleaning). I had wiped a couple times before taking the first picture on accident, so it was a little dirtier. |

When it stalled out it threw a CEL code of P0506.
P0506 Mazda Definition Idle control system RPM lower than expected Probable cause 1. Large vacuum leak 2. Blocked Air intake system 3. Throttle body damage 4. Engine mechanical condition There was some oil in the accordion tube that I wiped up when I was cleaning the TB and some in the air filter. I'll attach a pic of the air filter. I don't know if changing the air filter will fix the problem or not? Sorry for hijacking your thread Adam  |
Kalne,
lol no problem. I think it is good that everyone can just come here if they are having these problems.. My car has been running smooth ever since my P2096 CEL went away. I'm starting to wonder if this issue has something to do with the battery, but I could be completely wrong.. Here is my battery story: I purchased the car in March and drove it 500 miles back home. During that trip somehow the positive battery terminal bolt came off and was arching the battery, causing it to basically melt the one side of the battery. The car had like over 10 CELs because of the malfunction. I had my mazda dealer replace the battery with a new mazda battery. The car can fine after that. A few hundred miles later, I took the car back in to the dealer for an oil change and spark plug change. After this visit, my car started acting up with the rough idle and stalling. At that time is was very rare but did happen. Car then had ongoing issues as explained through this thread. Just last week my car wouldn't start. Long story short, the 2nd mazda battery failed and the dealer was booked for like 3 days, and I couldn't wait so I went and got a basic $80 battery from autozone. Every since putting in that new battery, the car has run fine with no rough idle or stalling. Were the majority of my issues caused by the batteries? Or maybe something with the spark plugs the dealer put in.. Been driving the car for over a week with no CEL, no rough idle, and no stalling with this new battery..... |
Adamci24 your going to find this pretty funny. so last week I cleaned the maf, throttle body and the battery terminals. then I dropped the optima battery about three months old. I'm not sure how old the battery on my car is. so next day the issues seemed to get worst and car idled lower and hard to get going.
then I sat in traffic for about an hour with a/c running with 95 degree outside. the next day my car had trouble starting like always but when I started to go I had little hesitation in low rpm. usually I have to ride the clutch to get out of the Low rpm but now it was driving like usually. it still has some hesitation ok low rpm bit nothing like before. it idled around 750 But still shakes a little and I feel I lost power in all power band so hope changing the coils and wires will eliminate the problem. I'm still throwing the p2096 cel but wonder if battery had a big thing to do with it. kane you should try that out next by changing your battery |

This happened to me before a few weeks after I got the car, but last week when I was redlining it to clear the carbon, I never got misfires. I had about 1/2 tank of gas when this happened this morning. I'm read that the misfires are due to coils/plugs/wires/fuel pump...I'm putting back in my stock exhaust on Wed, and I am installing the new BHR fuel pump the same day. If that new fuel pump doesn't make a difference, I'm thinking of seafoaming the engine again and then replacing the plugs, or cleaning them...Ever since my dealer swapped out my plugs, all my problems have started. |

Interesting...my car is definitely driving better with this non-mazda battery...

I didn't get to check the battery because before work this morning I dropped the car off at the dealer. I didn't hear from them today, but I'll keep you guys updated on what they say.

Mazda just called, they said that the first thing they want to do is clean out the throttle body, shutter valves, fuel injectors, and clean the cat (think he means check the cat?). And that it would run 130$. I asked about the TSBs relating to the issue and he said the that the the throttle body has a bunch of carbon buildup and that he wants to eliminate this first. I told him to go ahead and do it.
I'll let you know what he says when he calls back. EDIT: I forgot to say that he told me that all of the TSBs have been done. I know he is incorrect, because I checked the MSP16 status before taking it up there, and it was OPEN. But he seemed to believe that cleaning the throttle body, shutter valves, fuel injects, and cat could be causing the issue. I decided to just let him do it, as I attempted to clean the throttle body myself, so I don't believe it's that far fetched of an idea, and I'd rather him figure out on his own whatever the problem is, so that if it comes to replacing the engine, they will be willing to :) |

FYI, the follow up to the MSP16, leading to engine replacement: http://www.finishlineperformance.com...14-08-1924.pdf

The CEL came on yesterday randomly when I started my car. The car ran fine all day yesterday so I didn't take it to the dealer, but today the CEL was still on and the issues I talked about above happened. If I remember last month, when I had this stalling issue, the CEL came on. I left the car off for several hours and when I drove it again the CEL was off and the car ran fine up until today. I'm no expert but it seems this is an ignition problem (maybe coils) with the CEL popping on during ignition. I will have to take off a coil and look at it. I will replace them tomorrow and see if there is an improvement. I just baought this car used from a Mazda dealer, it has 56k and I'm
not sure when the coils were changed last. |

Has anyone tried replacing the O2 sensor yet?? I have a 2005 AT, and was getting a CEL for nearly a year and also rough idling, though my car only very recently stalled a couple times at idle. I took my car to the dealership, without having read this thread yet, and they told me that I was running lean and that I needed a new O2 sensor. I didnt have it installed at that time, because I had some other bills to take care of, but I still plan on having it done this month or next. I am curious to see if anyone else with this issue has tried this and to what effect

Def keep us posted on this...My car has still been idling fine ever since I put the fuel cleaner in it. I noticed my car still cranks awhile longer when starting hot. And this morning it was weird because the car cranked awhile when starting cold, and I think it was because my fuel tank was almost empty...I went and filled it up, and the next time I started it, it started quick. I am putting in that fuel pump today.

My CEL comes on and off intermittently, too. I don't think this necessarily means that the O2 sensor isn't malfunctioning, though... I think I am going to get mine replaced. If no one has done it before I get mine, then I will make sure to follow up here and let everyone know if it helped or not

Well called to get my gin checked and come to find out my car was never flashed :( its upsetting that the previous owner was such a douche bag and didn't do anything to the car like ur should have :/. Going to stop by and talk with the manager see what we can do, a lot of issues come that we experience with the car not being flashed.

--And the fuel cleaner I used was some from autozone in a silver bottle by Valvoline. |

Hmmm....that is most likely your issue then, unfortunately according to mazda, my car was flashed.

I just talked to a guy locally here with an 8 and his wasn't flashed either abd after they flashed it his car started to go out on him and it was fine before. He told me they have to replace his engine
Now I'm scared to get it flashed. I picked up my car Tuesday after work. The rep said that he cleaned the throttle body, shutter valve, fuel injectors, and cat. I asked him if he sprayed seafoam type stuff in there and let it smoke out and he said no, that he actually took it off and pushed cleaner through it. I am not sure exactly what he did. Does seafoam clean out fuel injectors and such? I have not been able to get it to stall but it idles low (doesn't go below 750 though) and today, while warm outside, it felt like I was driving a significantly less powerful car when it was below 5000 rpm. Time to take it back to the dealer? :dunno: |
