Why dost thou mock me?

So about two weeks ago my RX 8 gets backed into by a truck while parked right outside of my house. It pushes the left rear fender in about four inches and renders the car undrivable.

I watched the driver do this. I walk outside, and he swears up and down that it wasn't him. (I'm never quite sure how people think that a flat denial is an argument, but there ya' go) Through some effort on my part I now have a cheque for the full amount from the insurance company to repair it, but due to a general back log, my body guy can't fix it for another two weeks or so.

Therefore, I am now driving a rental, a very nice rental. Enterprise delivered up a brand spanking new Nissan Murano (114 miles on it), which is quite comfortable and drives fine . . . BUT IT ISN'T MY 8!

Now in the general scheme of driving, I see about one 8 a week on the roads. Since I got the Murano, I am seeing three a DAY, and each and every one of them reminds me of how miserable it is to not be driving my 8. It's driving me NUTS! I want my car back. I don't care if the Murano has AWD, great heat, comfortable interior. I want something with some snap to the acceleration, whir of rotors, and steering that can't be beat. Every time the Murano nose dives while stopping, I frown. I am jonesing for my car. BLAAAAAAAH.

Thing is that I can't tell anybody else about this. No one I know understands why I wouldn't like the brand new Murano. They don't drive the ultimate sports machine . . . poor sad freakazoids. Thanks for letting me vent. Enjoy those RX 8s because life without them isn't that much fun.

Gosh, that sucks...sorry to hear that but at least the damage was not really bad. There have been members here to really mess up their 8's, some even losing it. So...while your pain is understandable, remember things can always get worse.

Maybe you should take a vaction from the 8 club, as to not be reminded of your beloved.

My 8 is garaged for the winter and I am driving a free rental that work provided me. Its a new Impala. I hate it. No TCS, DSC, ABS. It has the stupid stearing column shifter (I miss my 6 speed tranny). The suspension makes me feel like I am going to roll it when I shift lanes or when I am on exit ramps. It feels like I am floating, which is nice, but at highway speeds, I feel less confident with it. 80mph in my 8 feels more solid than 80mph in the impala. The only redeaming things about it: auto headlights, factory remote starter, and the while the midrange response sucks, the stock stereo has better Bass response than the Bose in my 8 (oddly, I prefer the sound of the Bose to the impala). Oh, it does have some sweet gas mileage..27-30 mpg and it takes regular!I try to drive the 8 on weekends if there is no snow and if the roads are clear of salt and sand.

One or two days without the 8 and I'm twitching. I'm a fiend.

vectorwolf 12-07-2005 03:02 PM

Lol, isn't it odd how that works out? You always see a ton of a particular car either just after you buy it, or when you don't have it.

Can't rally say I feel too sorry for you being in the Murano, though. That's one SUV (alongside the FX45) that I actually wouldn't mind cruising around in.

Raptor2k 12-07-2005 03:02 PM

^me too. I had two CELs and an airbag light, had either a Mazda 3 or Chevy Malibu under warranty for rental. Perfect recipe for insanity.

menace1227 12-07-2005 03:09 PM

hang in there man

truemagellen 12-07-2005 03:12 PM

great post bud, you'll have your 8 back soon

as for the guy who backed into your car did his insurance pay up or yours?

if it was yours feel free to take a dump in his truck bed

toodaloo! :)

spork 12-07-2005 03:19 PM

wtf, i have NO sympathy for you.

try getting in an accident w/ a drunk driver then driving an OLD Dodge Neon as a rental for 2.5 weeks. you bastard!

Mikelikes2drive 12-07-2005 03:24 PM

i havent had my 8 in two or so weeks.... get it back today!!! with a MS front bumper muahaha

dazygirl415 12-07-2005 03:27 PM

I know exactly what you mean, in two ways.

When I wrecked, I drove a new Ford Explorer. It was really nice, but it wasn't my 8.

When I took my 8 in for the recall work, I was given a Buick Century. Given my size, it was like driving a tank. I vent to my roommate about it and how I miss my car and she says, "Tiff, there are people out there who would be grateful to have a car like that. There are people who CHOSE to buy that car. You're spoiled." Why yes, yes I am. And I want my car back!!! :

Hang in there, she'll be back soon and she'll be all fixed up!

Haze 12-07-2005 03:44 PM

I know, I know. I feel like a brat complaining about the Murano because it is a really nice SUV, but that's the point. I'm just not satisfied. I miss my 8, and then there are all these 8's running down the road looking good, driving great and they mock me. I feel like I'm going Son of Sam obsessing over the damn thing, and I have TWO MORE WEEKS TO GO! Blah. Stupid truck.

As for the insurance, my insurance has given me a cheque including my deductible, but they have not yet received payment so that could potentially go back, although when they give the whole thing, it's pretty unlikely that the other side won't cover it. The facts are pretty strongly on my side.

Anyway, thanks for the support! At least someone understands my Jones.

Im driving an impala...feel bad for me! On a different note..I think I see an rx-8 on the road about once a month...didnt see many in Atlanta (other than the GA RX-8 Club people I met) and only a few here in boston.

Hey it's an addiction and your having withdrawels. I know it must not be easy, but I truly think you will be ok.

Lot's of rest and take it easy for a couple days, then slowly ease back into your routine. :)

Mine has been garaged for the winter for about 2 weeks now. It will probably stay there until March. Talk about being bummed. At least I don't have to see others on the road. Mine is the only one around here.

HolyCross05 12-07-2005 09:16 PM

why don't you get winter tires?

LiveBlues 12-07-2005 09:20 PM

I can't afford them right now and I have another vehicle that is much more capable in the snow. Especially when it comes a foot at a time.

I understand exactly.

In my 4th week of ownership I took my RX-8 in for a failed cat and drove a brand new Jeep Liberty for 4 days. It had 11 miles on it when I got into it. It was clearly a nice SUV, but I missed my RX-8 so terribly and I saw more RX-8s in those 4 days than I had in the previous 4 weeks. I had to keep reminding myself not to honk and wave because I wasn't in my RX-8 (I'm sure they'd look at the Liberty and think, wtf? Is he jealous?)

In my 5th week of ownership a deer ran in front of me. After 3 weeks of waiting for parts to arrive they are now rebuilding my baby. Hertz set me up with a Celica rental and acted like they were doing me a huge favor. It has 24k miles and feels like a used Yugo compared to my fully loaded RX-8. Hertz actually called to see how I liked the car (because it's a long-term rental?) and when I complained about the handling and ask how it would handle the snow the lady acted offended. She says, "Well, bring it back and we'll swap you to an SUV or something. There are lots of folks who really want that Celica." Yeah, lots of folks who don't know better lady.

And, yeah, the day after the deer-wreck I saw three RX-8s including a gorgous Shinka. Mock indeed. :/

Great title, great post.

Hope you have your beloved one back soon.

Haze 12-08-2005 02:49 PM

Well, Cool Blue, you know the boat I'm in. It is merely fate mocking me and you. This is the second time that my car has been struck. The first time the RX 8 was all of three weeks old, and I was rear ended by a drunk college kid on the highway. The difference is that it was earlier in the year, and the car wasn't rendered undrivable so I just drove it until it had to go to the shop then drove an old mercedes that I keep around for kicks the two days that it took to fix, so I felt none of this karmic bitch slap of the rental car. I can't drive the Mercedes this time of the year due to the snow (older Mercedeses are very prone to rust and there is snow and salt all over the place here at the moment.) I think that the mockery of other 8's is merely fate's way of reminding us what we are without and pressuring me to protect my 8 better. Obviously, I should rent it its own garage (not going to happen but). God must be on the 8's side.

My commiserations to you on your troubles. She'll be good as new soon I'm sure, and whoever is fool enough to believe that a Celica is a cool car (much less half the car the 8 is) knows nothing of driving. Sad, sad, sad.

Thank you Haze. +1 to both of us for Proper Use of RX8Club.com Forum #23 - Group Therapy. :)

You're right about the fools - the Hertz Rental Counter at the local airport is populated by a fairly young, ignorant group right now. Given the typical turn-over they'll all be working somewhere else in a few weeks.

My mockery should come to an end soon. Best wishes for yours too.
