Why does the RX8 have the same MPG as a RX7???

RX-8:

MPG (city) 18
MPG (highway) 24
MPG (combined) 20

RX-7
MPG (city) 17
MPG (highway) 25
MPG (combined) 20

source: http://www.fueleconomy.gov

Ok not exactly the same but almost identical with RX-8 having one more mile in city and the RX-7 one more in highway. The RX-7 is twin turboed and is a decade older then the RX-8 that is not turboed at all. So why doesnt the RX-8 have better fuel economy compared to the RX-7?

refugeefrompistons 04-21-2007 08:53 PM

i would think it is how they use to measure MPG before, their standards were worse than now, even though currently, MPG needs altering to be closer to real life.

supergoat 04-21-2007 08:54 PM

Have fun getting 25mpg from an RX-7. :)

Kelioos 04-21-2007 08:57 PM

yes I guess that is true but, I would think that the extra 10 years of development time and the lack of turbos would make for a much more significant jump in efficiency.

refugeefrompistons 04-21-2007 09:03 PM

I think it is also how they tested the car even more, shifting at lower rpms... The rx-8 has significantly better MPG. I remember reading in an article that fuel efficiency increased about 20% after using side ports. I think the testing is extremely significant and would contribute to the lack of disparity.

tajabaho1 04-21-2007 09:54 PM

what the hell? I thought turbo makes better MPG?

Phantom Menace 04-21-2007 09:56 PM

cause the rx8 is the rx7's successor!
*puts on flame retardant suit* :wiggle:

mysql101 04-21-2007 10:08 PM

rx8 also weighs more.

i hope that is a joke...

imput1234 04-21-2007 10:27 PM

WTF??
The 8 defiantly has better mileage.
The ratings are fucked up
I've never gotten 18 on the city average 14-15

alerx-8's 04-22-2007 12:29 AM

i hear u , i get 12-14 mpg,
none the less the predicted "18 mpg"

Ok let me explain then... turbo spools in more compressed air into the engine so the gasoline or w/e burns more completely. I think I know why your thinking that turbos improve MPG... but that is only compared to increased displacement. For example... 2 liter turbocharged with same hp of 2.4 liter, the 2 liter probably gonna be better MPG. But turbos will NOT increase MPG.

tajabaho1 04-22-2007 12:49 AM

dude, I know I'm stupid, but I'm not THAT stupid, btw superchargers also increase gas milage, did u know? :)

Haha... sure... and my penis will detach itself at night and go around to the ends of the earth to be used as a dildo and reattach itself before morning. (Sorry, just wanted to be creative :wavey: )

tajabaho1 04-22-2007 12:55 AM

^ that is just sick

but nevertheless........interesting.......would the pleasure be transferred as a signal? if not.......screw that

Skythe 04-22-2007 12:56 AM

I would attribute it the RX-7 not being under much boost during testing. As stated before when they do these tests, the cars are under light load.

Shinka/10AE 04-22-2007 01:37 AM

I know that I don't post a whole lot, but... I have both an rx7 and an rx8 and I recall getting slightly better gas mileage out of my '88 Turbo 2 (approximately 20 average) than my 8 (average for everything I have read on this website at about 18 average). I was going to sell my rx7 but I am now going to keep it just because of that! Well, that and the fact that it has the "Kick your back into the seat" acceleration that the rx8 lacks. One thing I wonder about is the fact that the rx7 is not stock and maybe the racing beat full exhaust that I put on it somehow helps. Please don't flame me if that is wrong, I am a mechanical engineer but I don't know everything! :)

yep, see how much fuel an FD sucks with you are running along at redline with the twins screaming

kartweb 04-22-2007 11:08 AM

Fuel mileage is overrated. So what if you spend $2000 more for gas over 100,000 miles? You'll still spend more on tires then gas.

THANK YOU!!! STOP THE GAS MILEAGE CRAP!

So, YOU'RE the guy that wrote that song. "Detachable penis"

^ +1 lol. The second question would be, would VDs also be transfered by signal.

Beside, unless you could hook up a DVR inline with the signal it could make for some embarrassing moments.

Closest thing I could find.

seems to be necessary to elaborate on this fantasy. only my penis detaches so my balls will feel a warm sensation when it is being used as a toy :-D.

And yes that primus song is pretty sweet. but mine is self detaching and reattaching.

MazdaManiac 04-22-2007 01:46 PM

Its not Primus. Its King Missile.

This thread sucks, btw.

SmokeyTheBalrog 04-22-2007 02:17 PM

MM I have to disagree there, it seems more like a blowing thread than a sucking one.
