Where's my skid?!?

So last night a co-worker and I got stuck at work late and as we were leaving he was behind me in his car and me infront getting ready to pull onto the highway.

I decided what the hell and let em' rip out sideways and spun the sucker a good 60 feet or so and I come into work today and guess what... NOTHING on the ground not a shred of evidence of a peel out in any way. :scratchhe

Is it the light weight of the 8 or the tires or do I just suck at hitting the gas?!?!

check your drawers for skid marks

Leaving rubber on the road in a burnout usually means that the rubber was very soft, usually due to temp. Some tires are so soft that they will leave rubber driving normally (drag tires can get like this), otherwise the heat from the spinning tires would get the rubber soft enough. Higher pressure on the contact patch (weight, not tire pressure) accelerates the heat build up. Decreasing the contact patch through higher air pressures reduces heat build up. Having a harder tire compound means less traction and lower heat build up. Having the tires spin at a higher speeds increases heat build up.

So maybe you have hard all seasons and were not spinning them much faster than you were going? :dunno:

An exception to the above is stripping rubber by sheer abrasion. I remember seeing a video of a Mazdaspeed3 burnout on concrete with the e-brake up, and the rubber left wasn't smeared, it was a streak of dust that you could blow around.

you will not leave a lot of marks unless you are really smoking the tires like get them really hot and smoking so the rubber would melt onto the surface.
also has something to do with the road surface too.

Maybe you did the same kinda burnout this guy did.

I know repost but it seems fitting for this thread.--

Look at it on the bright side. At least the evidence of your burnout isn't like this guy's.

AaaaaaaHAHAHAHA!!!!!! ^^^^^^^^ Those are two of the most epic videos I have ever seen!

Dude in the Vette....what a hand-job! And the dude in the shitbox SRT truck, I can't believe he didn't smash whatever video device was used to record that. Unbelieveable.

i dunno about you, but i left some pretty sweet marks on the track

because i dont drift on the street, cuz thats street racing, which is illegal and banned on this forum

RIWWP 09-14-2012 09:10 PM

It's a fine line between drifting on the street and doing a burnout. I wouldn't class what he described as street racing.

Slidin8 09-14-2012 09:15 PM

i guess that depends on which country you live in i suppose

Here in NZ, if you do a lil drift or a burnout, you are treated like a mass murderer by police

and i know that from experience

RIWWP 09-14-2012 09:53 PM

Here on the forum it's less the legality of it, and more on a guideline of what is actually dangerous to people around you. The common sense that is missing from most judiciary circles.

Doing a burnout doesn't really qualify here.

Granted, the circumstances might be something that makes it dangerous, like someone saying "I was doing burnouts in the crosswalk as school kids were trying to walk across it"...yeah, we'd jump on that quick. Not seeing that here though.

In Connecticut (usa) a few years back I got busted by a cop doing a burnout and he gave me a ticket for "unsafe start" $120 mail in ticket like speeding or something. Not a real big deal. Still illegal none the less.

Not nearly as harsh as street racing. Last I heard, thats an automatic arrest and license suspension and car confiscated.

Thanks for the clear up RIWWP

ps. I love your bow tie

alnielsen 09-14-2012 10:03 PM

I've got busted twice here (IL) for "Squealing Tires" while cornering. One time the power steering wasn't working and I jerked the wheel too hard.

I don't consider drifting, racing. When your doing it in competition, it is a judged sport. However, the margin of being in and out of control is small. For that reason, it should never be performed on public streets.

RIWWP 09-14-2012 10:08 PM

^ which pretty much makes my point that common sense is lacking for the enforcement of those. My Miata squeals it's tires all the time....due to the LSD and tight turning radius. Then there are cars with really low traction rubber, squealing is easier than sticking a pig with a stick, and doesn't come close to 'dangerous'.

Yeah, a burnout is a hell of alot closer and can't be argued away legally. And we won't be recommending anyone do it (and it's not exactly our car's area of expertise). But by itself, it doesn't cross the line set by the intent of the forum rules.

A biker in the town i live was caught doing a burnout, got a telling off about "Driving without due care and attention" the policeman had a nice chat with him about his bike and said he was a biker and liked to have fun but didn't do it in the middle of the road outside a pub.
Said bike then decided to "pop a wheelie" as he rode off and had his license taken on the spot.
Generally the police here are pretty laid back but if you take the piss they will come down hard! After all, they are at work
