Where does Mazda stop and Ford start?
 

At what point does a Mazda become a Ford? The RX8 is a consideration on my list, but it would deeply concern me if it was injected with Fords so-called reliability.

The RX-8 and Miata are built in Hiroshima and will remain that way. Makes no sense to export a Ford to America and piss off the UAW, does it? And Fords don't sell well in Japan. The RHD Mazda6 sedan is already being built and on sale in Japan, and will be used as a quality yardstick when they begin US production and distribution this fall. Remember, Ford does not outright own Mazda like Jaguar, Volvo, Land Rover, etc. They own controlling interest and majority of shares, thus have a majority on the board of directors and can dictate company manufacturing, marketing, policy, share technologies, and what-not. Think of it as dipping your foot into a pool without taking the outright plunge, yet controlling the pool temperature and company success overall. Powertrains, especially 4-bangers, are happily being shared across both platforms, but don't expect something as outlandish as a rotary mustang GT. Two entire different platforms and target markets, and neither company wants to produce product that competes against each other. Doesn't make sense, anyways.

I'd assume the RX-8 will be safe, although some technologies may make it to Dearborn. Ford will be watching the RX-8 closely to see how it will be received. Remember, the Renesis program was almost born stillborn(RX-Evolv-era) when Ford took power. Actually we should thank them for throwing Mazda a financial lifeline. They want Mazda to return to profitability..just like we all do, especially with rotary products.

I think Toadman very aptly summed up the Ford/Mazda relationship.

When working a year ago I met a few of Nasser's boys, the view of Mazda, at least while Nasser was in charge of Ford, was not only to restore Mazda to profitability. But also to try and convert Mazda into a a brandaname similar to Lexus or BMW. The rotary was seen as Mazda's unique advantage into capturing a part of the more expensive, upscale market. Thus the renewed interest in the rotary and push for the RX-8.

I wish I could give a more up-to-date inside view from Ford, but all my bridges were burned when Nasser left.
