When do i shift?

I just bought a Rx-8 and it's my first stick shift, so I'm still learning how to drive it. But i notice it's a high revving engine so i believe the shifting points are different, so I'm just wondering what rpm are you guys shifting at when you go out for a easy drive, because right now I'm shifting at 3,500 rpm. Thanks!!

when you hear the beep...

just kidding, do whatever feels right to you, i usually shift around 4k normally, remember to redline once in a while to keep the carbon out

What's up! Funny you made this thread, I also recently acquired an RX-8 and I'm also still learning to drive stickshift. I'm about three weeks in myself.

You're "supposed" to shift every 3,000-3,500 rpm from what I understand, but sometimes I can't help but stick around 5k-7k when I'm in third. I think you're good though; I wouldn't worry about it.

Before the coolant and oil are warmed up keep the revs below 4000! After that shift when you like :)

When cruising, I always shift right around 4k. That usually provides the smoothest transitions until as the others say the car warms up and you can start shifting whenever. Anything bellow 4k seems like the car says F-U don't shift me so early with a jerk to the car. Just my observation. My previous cars which were more economy minded were able to be shifted at 2k and even 1k with no problems and felt like an auto shift. The rx-8 is most definitely a whole other beast in itself!

shift whenever you want to, depending on how deep you on the throttle.

azzuro is right, remember to properly warm up before you drive hard

3k to 4.5k for economy driving

I don't recommend anything below 3 for sure, not even 3.5. I shift at 4k and I still got 20mpg this last tank of gas, just watch your throttle position. Mazda is starting to think the carbon build up had to do with people shifting at a low rpm. Like many have suggested, shift around 4-5k and you will be fine.
