Wheelspin at 8,000 rpm!?!?!

Hey guys...

I've been fairly gentle with my baby since I've had it, but yesterday I decided to let it loose...

Installed 17" wheels and snowtires myself about 4 weeks ago.

Yesterday, on what I assume were clear roads (though very, very cold, as it was about 10 degrees yesterday), I raced the car up to redline... including straightaways... and could feel the wheels spinning once I got to redline, in second and third gear!!!

Is this typical?!?!?!?

In those conditions with snowtires... yeah. :)

Snowtires have far less grip in dry conditions than your "all-season" Protenzas. Chances are you also installed skinnier tires than the 18's as well.

I have no snow tires, I have the stock tires. In our New England single digit temps, my car spins the tires very easily. I just roll on the throttle in any of the 3 lower gears and it will spin around 5000-6000 RPM. I never drive with the DSC or traction control on. Even though there a million threads on how crappy these tires are in severe cold and snow, I'll say it again: These tires suck in anything below 40 degrees. Even in the dry, at these temps they turn to glass. It's crazy.

I knew I could count on y'all for the answer.

Funny, out today at between 9 and 18 degrees, enjoying my 8, after tires got warmed up, might have felt a lttle earlier slide, but not much. Same fun as always.

Turn to glass, or anything close to it? I didn't feel that at all. Are your tires warn on yours? I wonder why you have such a problem?

I went to Tirerack.com, these RE040 tires are known for this. I will be getting different tires when the stock potenza's wear out.

The best for the money I have found are the potenza s-03 pole positions.

Anyone else know of good tires to replace stock tires?

I hear Toyo T1-S are pretty good.. kinda soft on the sidewall from what I hear. But if they run them in the speed GT series they can't be all bad right?

The SO3's are excellent tires and loved by many though they are on the heavy side as far as weight is concerned and they are a little on the bigger then normal size.

In other words, the same size SO3 is usually a little wider patch then other tires in the same size.

Haha..sorry was exaggertaing a little. But this morning(it was 12 degrees), I was doing a 3 point turn. As I tried to go forward, with the steering at full lock, it just plowed straight ahead. I was amazed. It was understeering at a crawl. I also get that horrible flat spot phenomon every morning. Now, I am not scared or outraged by these wierd quirky tires. I kind of like the more tossable nature with the less traction. Oh, btw, my car only has 1200 miles, and the tires are good as new. Now these are the most exotic tires I have ever owned. So I'm getting used to them.
