Wheel lock key.

So I recently lost my wheel lock key (like an idiot) and I was wondering if all the mazda keys are universal. And if anyone know where I can order one.

Post up a pic of the pattern on your wheel locks and I'll compare them to my key. I have no use for the key anymore and would be willing to ship it to you.

I don't think they're universal, but I never compared mine to anyone else's. (Are secret fraternity handshakes different?) The dealer never needs my key when they rotate tires...one of the service writers said they have a universal key. Since the locks are not cut up, I presume they're not using one of those things that looks like a socket with an easy-out spiral on the inside. Or the "hammer a socket onto it" trick that thieves used.

The locks are made by McGard. Web site mcgard.com. Worst case is that you'll need to buy a new set and have a dealer or tire store (or a street urchin) get the old ones off.

Not 100% sure on the RX8, but mazda did the miata such that they were the same across miatas of similar vintage.

You're best bet is to go to your mazda dealer and have them take it off for you, and replace it with a normal lug - and save yourself the potential problems inherent to the "locked" lugs that don't do much to stop a thief who wants your wheels. Alternatively, you can get a new key from the dealer - it will be over priced, but at least you'll known before you leave the parking lot that it is the correct key for your wheels.

McGuard wheel locks have about a dozen or so different patterns regardless of what make of car you have. The dealer has a master key kit that includes one each of the various shapes needed.

Its easier for the service tech to try each one of them in the kit till one matches up that to root through somebody's car trying to find the key.

Also saves against having to deal with the frantic "pop in" customer. "You lost my key!! Now I need it!! I was at your shop last!!!

Ask around, I lost the one for my 8, the one on my 6 fit fine. I bought 4 lug nuts and am now unlocked.

the way the lock set works is that Mazda has one lock set that fits most of their cars, there is a second set for the tribute and then a 3rd for some other stupid ford POS that nobody bought.

the part number is 0000-88-120D-BP. there are about 10 different keys for the set, and theoretically they are available separately, however you need to figure out which one you have and order it from the manufacturer, so its easier just to buy a new set, or 4 lugnuts, and go without locks.

list on the set is $54.95

the lug nuts are B002-37-160B list for $6.89 each.
or you can go to Ford and buy E7GZ 1012 B for probably more

my editorial comment is that the wheel locks are a stupid PITA, and that if ii wanted your wheels they wouldn't slow me down, at all.

++ ^^

your nuts should be free.

you could do what i did and just replace the locking lugs from an auto parts store. the locking lugs look like open ended bolts now.
