Whats the theft rate for the RX8?

I was wondering if anyone knew the theft rate of the RX8?

I am a college student and I am considering buying one, but I am afraid that it might get too much attention. Which would lead to it being scratched, keyed, or stolen.

Has anyone had any problems of this sort?

Feras 05-31-2004 02:22 PM

its prolly not a high theft rate car, simply because its hard to steal, alarm and microchip key are pretty good deterrents.

but on a college parking lot its gonna get keyed eventually, think about it, some drunk a**hole walking around, sees a nice car gets pissed and jealous that he doesnt have one and he'll key it and not even think about it, then you gotta worry about people parking too close and dinging ya, all in all its better off in a closed place where you can see it

There have been reports of random vandalism and hit and runs. I don't think anyone has actually gotten there stolen. What school are you going to go to ?

And definitely get a shock sensor !!!!

I think the car is too difficult to steal for a random joy rider, but not worth enough to be stolen by a professional.

Car jacking is another matter.

HAHA. Thats what I dont want to happen.

So far, I have only seen 1 RX8 in the area. Ands that another reason why I am hesistant about getting a RX8.

Since the security system is top notch, I am no longer worried about it being stolen, but I am still fearful of it being vandalized.

I think the price / security balance will avoid mass theft.

Mercedes and BMW are not easier to steal, but far higher priced and easier to sell I guess.

Good Point.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can keep from being vandalized? I live in an apartment complex that has an open parking lot.

A unique and special car like the 8 will unfortunately tend to attract the wrong kind of attention from those that wish they could have something so special. At a high school or college, where most attending can't afford the 8 (and maturity may not have been reached) - I fear the vandalism would be inevitable.

As hard as it is to accept, you'd be better off driving a beater to school, and getting the 8 later (unless you don't mind a keyed car, or have the means to have it repaired often). Unfortunately, this is the likely scenario.

"It looks like he has both index fingers on the trigger!"

I for myself will rent a garage, to avoid vandalism and freezing in the winter. But I think vandalism is less an issue with this car than with many other cars. People don't seem to be envious about it, they just admire it. I had several scratches on my BMW (I live in a part of town that's not exactly rich), but with the RX-8 I have a feeling that people would rather polish it than scratch it, because they simply enjoy looking at it.

Just buy it. I go to college too. If it gets keyed, fix it. If it gets dinged, fix it. These things aren't a big deal, and if you can't afford it, who cares? You'll still have the nicest car around. Getting dings and keyed are part of life, can't worry about it and not dive something you don't enjoy.

The insurance on the 8 is very low, it's classified as a four door sedan (which it is), so I don't think it would be very expensive to get a low ($100) deductable. I would think it's well worth it if you really think you're destined to be damaged.

Lufa 05-31-2004 10:31 PM

Another plus to the 8 is that it does not have a lot of pieces that can be chopped and sold like a Saturn or an accord.

Ever wonder why those crappy and older cars are always the ones stolen the most? It's not because there is a large blackmarket demand for 1996 Saturn's. :).

I agree with everone else about the vandalism thing, there are a lot of places I will not park my 8, but would not have 2nd thoughts about parking my wife's protege.

Mace Howling 06-01-2004 01:31 AM

alright, its settled. you have all convinced me.

I will get an 8 this summer.

No comes the tough part, what color and options will i get? Oh no!, but thats for another thread

Thanks again everyone
