What's my best argument?

I'm gettin' ready to throw down some cash on a brand spankin' ( :spank: ) new RX-8. I've researched the hell out of it, weighed all the pros and cons, and decided this sounds like the car I've always dreamed of. The only problem is my mother (who is providing the initial cash) thinks I'll get bored of it after my "initial excitement", realize it isn't practical, and get tired of high gas bills. Of course, she hasn't actually SEEN one in person yet :) How can I get her to understand how awesome this technical masterpiece is?

Lol I'm not one to talk but I smell deployed airbags (and thats from experience)... make sure you get tcs. And if it's your mom... you probably dont want to clue her in on the whole same lap time as e46 m3 deal... you'll want to focus on the fact that its a 1.3L 4 door mazda.. nothing special (from the other thread).

Raptor2k 05-03-2006 01:15 AM

The car is pretty damn practical.

And a lot of people here will tell you that you that your relationship with the 8 will grow by the day.

Winning 8 05-03-2006 01:18 AM

tell your mother that, you are going to work your ass off to get this dream car of yours.

TKZ 05-03-2006 01:26 AM

I HAVE been working my ass off! I just need some extra cash to put me over the top. I want it now and I don't want to pay collision on insurance during a lease. The idea that I'll get bored with the car almost made me laugh. I expect to love this car for a long time. My only problem will be speed. I'm a maniac in my freakin' ford escort. I don't know what I'll do when I get behind the wheel of this baby...

Die..... :nono: watch yourself.

But it is extremely useful car, take her for a drive.

Winning 8 05-03-2006 01:39 AM

work harder to get it yourself, so you will not get bored so quickly.

NgoRX8 05-03-2006 02:03 AM

do you tend to get bored of things quickly? if so you should go test drive cars for a few weeks to realize which one you like best and show your mom that.

Hightshoe 05-03-2006 10:05 AM

Just make sure you get all the options you want in the 8. Other than that, I dont know how you could get sick of a car that revs freely to 9000+ rpm.

Duke15 05-03-2006 10:14 AM

Here's an idea: Grow up, let go of your mom's skirt and buy the car on your own with your own money.

SoFL_RX8 05-03-2006 10:22 AM

Its a damn safe car... moms like that stuff. Id say sell her on its safety. Oh, and the insurance rates are VERY reasonable on this car. That should help a little at least.

soldano 05-03-2006 10:40 AM

if you wait until you can afford the rx-8 on your own (inc the monthly and down payments, ins, gas, maintenance, etc), you won't need to present an argument to your mom and you'll appreciate the car more.

and if you aren't mature enough to drive the car safely and keep the racing on the track, then don't get it. period.

Red Devil 05-03-2006 10:44 AM

If you have a problem with speed in your Escort, maybe getting a sports car isn't the right thing for you. Either that, or you'll have to learn to drive differently because the speeds this car will take you to and the velocity you will go around corners can get people into trouble. That said, the RX-8 isn't all that powerful in comparison to its competition, and is very forgiving at the limits so there may not be a better high performance car to learn in.

Skythe 05-03-2006 10:55 AM

Make sure you convey the "safety" features. You have technically 6 air bags, but when you count the "SRS" labels in the car, you can cheat and say you have "8." Also, do try to get DCS, although I do not have this feature, I do know it can be a godsend to keep your ass out of a wall or gaurd rail. This car is very practical for a young person. You have 4 fully functional seats, which holds the driver and 3 females VERY comfortably.

Before you take the offensive approach, ask her what her concerns of practicality are. Ask her to be very specific, instead being general, and using that typical parental "becuase it just is" tone. What you want to do is to diffuse her arguements one by one, and totally disarm her.

That's all I got from your last post. Wish we had your mom's phone number so we could call and tell her not to get it for you. :sadwavey:

Sound advice. Got a lead foot myself, so I drove pickups for years. Now I'm a bit older, slightly more responsible, and still unable to keep the speeds down. Footing the ENTIRE bill for the 8 will likely help you manage. Good luck. Be sure to get the BB!!

Listen to your mom, you are not ready for a car like this. The car is much faster than it feels because it revs so smoothly and easily. You can do 85mph in 3rd gear and not necessarily realize it. If you have a problem with speed now in an Escort, you have a good chance of killing yourself and/or others in this car. I'm not trying to put you down or anything, I'm just pointing out what you have already posted about how you drive.
