What's a Fair Price to Have Tires Mounted & Balanced?

So I bought the BF Goodrich g-Force tires (225/45/18) on sale for $75 a piece from Tire Rack.

What's a fair price to have them mounted and balanced OTD?

I called Discount Tire, which is ordinarily very reasonable, and they wanted $75.

I was thinking something closer to $50 would be fair.

Am I off base?

rx8cited 04-16-2009 11:15 PM

Yep, off base if it's $50 total for 4 wheels. Got to tirerack.com and search for a local installer, then check their posted prices for comparisons.

dondo 04-16-2009 11:17 PM

my dealer did it for $12.50 a piece

dozer 04-16-2009 11:18 PM

out here in santa ana they do it for about 10$ a piece but you gotta know spanish

carbonRX8 04-16-2009 11:19 PM

I paid something like $200 for no-touch mounting and road-force balancing at a specialty shop. I felt a little icky afterwards.

Worse, my bro-in-law can mount and balance for free.

Easy_E1 04-16-2009 11:26 PM

My speciality shop does it for $35.00 a wheel. Mounted and road force balanced. But they also do Lambo's and the such. I'm picky.

Ross_Dawg 04-16-2009 11:34 PM

costco is $10 a piece; also any local shop you can sweet talk to $40 for the job

RotoRocket 04-17-2009 12:24 AM

Sweet. Glad I asked.

I don't need any specialty shop prices. Why are some of you burning money like that? Crazy mofos.

I'll check out Costco, tirerack.com's installer list and the dealer.

I can't speak Spanish, lol.

amacrx8 04-17-2009 12:30 AM

I think $60-70 for all 4 should be a fair price if they are Hunter Road Force balanced, taxes and fees included. They do seem to be rather low-profile tires, which are typically more expensive to mount.

A good balance is important if you don't want a lot of vibration on the highway. It's more complicated than just throwing the tires on.

kersh4w 04-17-2009 12:33 AM

i paid $80 at the same place my brother paid $40.

......

and i actually DO speak spanish.

always.anthony 04-17-2009 02:43 AM

i paid 18 a tire, they took their time in a good way, didnt scratch rims and what not...maybe caus i was watchin them! :P

...i paid 23 a tire....they stole 20 dollars from me, screw ntb. and now i have a dumb receipt that says congrats you paid this much for services at ntb. that won't help me get my money back.

RotoRocket 04-17-2009 04:17 PM

Well, Costco won't mount tires unless you buy them there.

I went to a tirerack.com recommended installer (called them) and got a price of $18 per tire.

Anyone have any concerns about Wal-Mart?

They will do everything - dismount, remount of new tires, balance with inside and outside weights (if required), using a Corgy (is that how it's spelled) instead of a Hunter, for $12 per tire, including valve stems and disposal.

This is the best price so far.

you mean beside the fact that they are a shitty company who treat their employees like crap and are effectively ruining small town businesses?

I know what you're saying.

I guess I should pay the $80 with a clear conscience.

But then the Wal-Mart employees may get laid off if more people do this.

It's a quagmire, I tell ya'.

ZoomZoomH 04-17-2009 06:46 PM

i pay $80 to have the local dealership do it.

When I was getting ready to get my winters mounted & balanced, I checked at wal mart for pricing just for grins, and they informed me they wouldn't even touch low profile 18s.

risky business 04-18-2009 09:47 AM

I do it myself! It's Free!

learycd 04-18-2009 10:31 AM

i paid 120 for mounting and balance with the tmps put in on my new rays

last place i went to i paid 80 and they screwed up big time, i rather not take the chance at costco or some other cheaper place with my nice wheels. its really a once in a while expense so get it done at a legit place id say

I know people that work at Wal-mart and I'm gonna have to disagree with the treating employees like shit part. I suppose there are bad stores, but corporate is very big on treating employees right because they don't want any more labor problems then they already have. Very accommodating with time off, you get insurance, it's not a bad deal save the low wages.

I think rotorsport charged me 80 bucks for mount and balance, including a tire disposal fee. 15 to mount and balance, 5 to get rid of the old tire.

staticlag 04-18-2009 11:37 AM

$25 total at the dealer. But then again my dealer also is going to sponsor a track day for us.

Wow. That's a dealer to hang on to, for life.

elysium19 04-18-2009 11:15 PM

I called 3 shops in the area, they all wanted $20 a wheel, so $80 total, though things are generally pretty expensive in my area.

If you have nice wheels, you'd want to make sure they are careful and use the right equipment and care.

wassup_nuthin 04-22-2009 11:55 AM

static is your dealer my dealer? lol? woodhouse of omaha? they are really good even w/ warrenty issues they turn their heads many times when ive been in there w/ my car. *zach* is the guy you want hes never turned my away for my mods.

back on topic. where i used to work its 3.00 to take a tire off a rim and 3.00 to put a tire on a rim. and 8.00 a tire to balance it. so if you have tires on your rims plus balance would be 14.00 a tire.

and for balancing any shop should be the same as for quality, the machine spins it tells you where to put the weight, spins it again then tells you if it has a zero balance or not, if it dont you move the wieght or put more wieght on. so ide say 60.00 or less is a good deal

and they also throw in a free lawn-care coupon.

Aseras 04-22-2009 12:38 PM

Every walmart around here will not mount tires below 50 series height.

tibyABv6 04-22-2009 12:41 PM

road force is waist of money
Dont pay more then $15 per tire.

DefinitiveDetour 04-22-2009 03:46 PM

Tires Warehouse charged the same tirerack would of ... didn't charge for mounting/balancing.

Came back 2 weeks later for a custom alignment for only $60.

I was happy.

carcrazy95 04-24-2009 05:08 PM

I just had 4 tires mounted & balanced at John Kenendy Mazda in Conshohocken PA, who charged $22 per wheel ($88 total + tax).

UNFORTUNATELY, the technician damaged all 4 wheels! All 4 wheels have gouges and scrapes on them. I brought it to the Mazda dealer and paid more than a typical garage because I thought they would be more careful. Not.

I will be back there on Monday insisting that they replace the wheels. The car only has 2200 miles on it, and the wheels were all perfect when I brought it in.

road force balanced?

Razz1 04-24-2009 06:17 PM

They change Lambo doors. that's good to know.

ferg 04-24-2009 07:41 PM

Sorry to steal the thread but how much should they charge me to install s tech springs and do a alignment?
i dont want to over pay and let them smile at me, i remember paying like 800 bucks for my altima to be lowered and alignment, but i felt i was ripped off 3 years ago

Razz1 04-24-2009 07:51 PM

Don't put spring in unless you upgrade the shocks like Tokica or Koni

350 to 400 bucks plus alignment

akela 04-25-2009 12:50 AM

PTuning charges $30 / tire, which I think is just a smidge high.

always.anthony 04-25-2009 02:10 AM

discount does it the cheapest i think, they road force balance everything now, i think they are the leading company, not advertising them but just letting everyone know.

they:roadforce balance everything now
free tire repairs (nails and such) on oem tires, or i forgot the prices, but aftermarket low profile tires cost 15 for a 1 time fee, and then its free with them for life, i asked why exactly, and they said its a pain for low profiles, and they take extra care. true, the flop other customers rims around, and they have 2 guys load my powdercoated rims.

so for balances, go for them. i dont know about alignment costs and what not.
