What my stepdad calls the "power-shift"

I'm wondering if any of you guys shift like this. To me it seems sort of abusive to the clutch, but I can be stupid about stuff like this. He's got a Silver 05 GT with the MT.

Well when he wants to accelerate as fast as he can he gets it up to 9k, hits the clutch and shifts quick without taking his foot off the floor. He manages not to hit the rev limiter and I must say that it does seem to increase acceleration, but I'm wondering at what cost...

Jedi54 03-03-2009 05:12 PM

the clutch, synchros, and transmission are going to LOVE him. :)

CyberPitz 03-03-2009 05:15 PM

That...that....hurts so bad.

Imagine if when you are digesting food, if the stomach never closes the hole to your intestines, in order to push things out faster. You're ass wouldn't feel so well, would it?

dozer 03-03-2009 05:17 PM

ive done it a couple of times :)

CyberPitz 03-03-2009 05:19 PM

I've never done it....but TBH, am actually curious if it does increase the 0-60 times.

AndrewE 03-03-2009 05:21 PM

Sounds like more of a quick shift, power shift is when you shift using the vehicles power, no clutch usage necessary

alienRX8 03-03-2009 05:26 PM

I have done it various times and it did help my 1/4 mile times so it does help a bit, just dont do it a lot cause it hurts the clutch a bit.

jayrx8 03-03-2009 05:30 PM

i've done it plenty of times in my rsx type s, but this tranny feels more sensitive...in my rsx i used to bang through all the gears without letting go of the gas and yes i did feel more power, but im too affraid to damage the rx8 tranny...i granny shift lol

YaXMaNGTO 03-03-2009 05:36 PM

Yah, if you go do it with perfect precision, it's not terrible, but it's not good either. Do it poorly like a hairy gorilla, and you will break stuff. A lot of people lift completely off the throttle between shifts, which is slow. Rev matching on upshifts helps to get clean, fast, efficient shifts. Maybe he's not lifting completely, but I hope he's not keeping it 100% floored.

If he is, what's the point in a car that does 0-60 in 6 seconds? Don't beat on a precision instrument...

Marklar 03-03-2009 05:40 PM

That's called flat shifting. I messed up the tranny on my first car doing that. It's bad, m'kay?

PhillipM 03-03-2009 05:44 PM

The power is keeping load on the dogs when you whip them out and force them in the next gear, half dipping the clutch only relieves some of that force, you'll have a lovely worn gearbox in short order.

Far better shifting by preloading the gearstick and with a quick release of the throttle switching gears without the clutch, if you get that right the only thing you're straining is the synchros.

Socket7 03-03-2009 06:04 PM

I'd call that the "Void your warranty shift"

Symbioticgenius 03-03-2009 06:16 PM

No Joke, if your racing, with sponsorship for financial backing, go for it, if you are just the average joe, you will be replacing clutches left and right, and the trans isn't the strongest. Good Luck

PhillipM 03-03-2009 06:52 PM

If you're racing, fit a sequential.

Phi 03-03-2009 07:01 PM

does he have NOSS!! or VTEC!!?
topic: yeah i wouldnt consider doing it all the time or doing it at all. maybe once in a long time. i would never do it imo.

The Drunk IT Guy 03-03-2009 08:28 PM

On Saturday morning me and him were riding into town to pick up a tiller (long story), and he turned off the highway to take this curvy lake-side backroad. Well we get going and he's "power shifting" trying to show me what I could do with mine and he's just about to finish out third gear when a DPS State Trooper comes rolling around the next corner. Both heads in that car locked on us as we flew by. We get pulled over of course and he gives him a ticket for 74 in a 60, and it would've been more had I not barked "COP!!"..

Ruined the rest of the road...

Wait...how do you pick up a tiller in an 8?

risky business 03-03-2009 09:53 PM

i wouldnt do it in my 8.... maybe a beater pos tho.

Phi 03-03-2009 10:01 PM

exactly haha im trying to figure out how tiller could fit in our cars.

The Drunk IT Guy 03-04-2009 08:36 AM

It was a small tiller that could fit into the back seat after an unsuccessful attempt to get it into the trunk.

^WOT can be scary in fast cars I guess?

dozer 03-04-2009 09:36 AM

did it a couple times last night, you gotta time it PERFECT if your stomping on the gas

alnielsen 03-04-2009 09:37 AM

Is this a garden or a sailboat tiller? I have a garden tiller that would fit in the trunk, but I'd never do it. That's what the Subaru is for.

He's got this man-made pond with several hundred catfish in it. Water has been leaking out of it ever since he burned away some cat-tails along the edges. So he's mixing in this stuff that turns to slime when mixed with water, effectively resealing the pond.

Funny thing is that he has a Ford pickup but wanted to go for a joy ride and to see if I could fix the stereo which had stopped playing through the speakers. That shit's broke, blown fuse maybe.

When all is said and done he's trying to make himself potentially self sustainable with his 7 acres in case everything goes to shit. A wind generator is going up this summer. I suppose his 8 could make a nice guest bedroom for two.

notorque 03-04-2009 10:26 AM

the thing i have noticed in our cars, if you shift too fast the synchros scream at you in the form of sounding like starbucks coffee grinder.....still goes in gear, just not without protesting to you to stop....
i would only do it on the track....every once in a blue moon, and if your going to be doing this, get the synchro saver from fluid cuz i bet you are yanking the hell out of that shifter.
The RX-8 requires grace and skill to drive right, you cant just bang it like your highschool girlfriend, you slam this, shits gonna break.

dynamho 03-04-2009 12:19 PM

I feel sorry for the next owner of the stepdad's car.
Unless drag racing, what's the point of abusing the transmission like that? So he can get to the traffic light 0.2 seconds quicker and wait 0.2 seconds longer?

The Drunk IT Guy 03-04-2009 12:54 PM

I did tell him that it seems rather hard on the tranny, but he replied that that's why he bought the extended warranty.

This is his second silver 8, and perhaps the curse is alive. The previous car killed a deer, buzzard, turkey and a barbed wire fence. One of the dump trucks that come through had spilled gravel onto the street near the said fence. It reminds me of that movie Final Destination, the world is out to get him and that car.

Warranties don't cover abuse. Flat shifting is abuse. He may be in for a big surprise when he gets the bill for a new transmission.

How to perform a revmatch on upshift? It seems the rpm are dropping and there's nothing the driver can do to make the rpm drop faster to engage the next gear?

I agree that is plenty fast enough, but I guess some people want to squeeze out more at the expense of mechanical life? Like all those turbo people.

shazy 03-05-2009 12:29 AM

Dominion's post is hands down the funniest shit I've read in awhile... even better than the Confessions thread!

But seriously, I don't even powershift my old 98 civic, imagine the rx-8. Good luck with his (crappy aisin) tranny and clutch :)

DOMINION 03-05-2009 10:39 PM

Nothing wrong with power shifting. You know... "Just do it"
