What the hell IS that "rocks in a blender" sound

I've been reading about these RX8's under extremely hot driving conditions stalling at red lights, then being super difficult to start then when finally started, low power with "rocks in a blender" sounds coming from the engine. Next...trip to the dealer and new engine ordered. What the hell is going on? OK...old rotaries would warp their chambers and allow coolent into the combustion chamber = steamer. This is definately NOT that. So WHAT is failing? Side seals? Corner Seals? What could make that rocks in a blender sound? Anyone have any clues?

I live in PR and its plenty hot here. I havent had that problem. I did have a metalic "nuts in a can sound" but it turned out to be one of the engine mounts and rotary pre ignition due to CHEAP GAS. Learned my lesson, never again will my baby get the cheap stuff.

BTW that picture was in the shade!! I've seen it all the way at 118 but didn't take a picture.

Zoom...I have read lots and lots of posts here about people having the problem, but I haven't seen any explanations of the exact origin of the sound and what's involved in the failure necessitating a new engine.

I have a picture of 110 from a few weeks ago. The temperature reading got up to 114 but when I noticed it, it wasn't convenient to take a picture with my camera as I was driving in stop and go traffic during rush hour. Everytime we stopped I grabbed for my camera and before I got it turned on traffic was moving again. LOL

for your reaing enjoyment

as far as rocks in a blender- it cant be contributed to just one thing because many people are actually hearign a different noise but describing it similarly. one persons knock from bad fuel was anotehr persons air trapped in the heater core. and anotehr persons 'rattling marbles sound" was actually just the normal operation of the intake. so unless someone with knowledgge can actually hear acar or two people claiming the noise can hear each others sound in person its hard to determine the root cause.

there is also something else that i cant think of the name of currently. it was described here recently in a quote from an email reply. its related to knock and loss of compression which many of the blown engine people might be hearing. thats when the apex seals dont seal properly (over temp oil or carbon build up) and exhaust gases squeeze into the chamber behind that one that just combusted. so these hot gases pass in to a cool chamber and possibly ignite and hit against the seal they just passed by.

That condition would be "spitback" (I love Engrish). And yes, I have a condition that I've described the sound as marbles in a blender, but I'm quite sure my condition is different from at least some of the others. I think zenmoused and I might have the same condition though. I have never experienced any powerloss or CELs, but according to Racing Beat the stock MIL sensor is weak and sometimes doesn't detect knock when there is. zoom, if you're ever in California, give me a ring and I'll let you drive my car.

Alright I'll be there provided my engine hasn't grenaded yet (knock on wood).
