Just washed mine. It's been just over a week since its last wash but it briefly rained a few days ago so that made it look really gross. Plus the rear of my car gets very dirty, very fast. Catless problems.

You gonna eat that?

Changed the oil, rotated the tires, forgot to turn the key off, killed the battery, charging battery now.

I've been there before. My battery seems like it's on its last leg, cold cranking has gotten pretty lazy these last few days. I'll probably buy a new one tomorrow or later on this week.

Two and half day road trip
Arrived last night in Eugene after two and a half days of driving. The 8 did great! At worst got 24mpg and best was 27mpg. Drove through Las Vegas, Death Valley, up Hwy 395 in CA (beautiful). Thinking of a coastal drive to get back next week. The 8 had so much more pep at 400 feet sea level vs the 5300 where I live in AZ high country. Pic is from Hwy 395

I am a bit depressed right now. 201,210 miles on the clock, I replaced my ignition coils and changed the oil last night. Today, as I was entering the freeway. I floored it to 55 on second gear. I heard something rattle in a cyclical motion; I first thought it was the electric fan. All of a sudden the battery light turned on, radio is still playing and the A/C is still working. I decided to take the exit, at this time at least 30 to 45 seconds have passed since I heard the "flapping" sounds. Came to a stop light and that is when I saw the stock temp gauge creep to the right and reach the second to the last tally mark. Around 2 minutes have passed until I parked the car to check. At that time, the coolant just started to over-flow from the reservior tank.
Well, here are the pictures of the drive belt after it snapped which I should have inspected at the same time I was replacing the coils last night, you could see what happened to the first clip on the ignition coil. NOW YOU KNOW!

Just took a drive up the 405 to Mazdatrix and picked up a case of Idemitsu. My Sohn adapter kit came today so Idemitsu was the last thing I needed for the install. Hopefully I'll get that done Wednesday or Friday since I have both days off. Probably going to go buy a new battery later today too. My car really didn't want to start this morning.

27mpg
Beautiful picture, sounds like a fun trip! 27mpg? That sounds unreal! Mostly cruising 60-65mph? My girlfriend and I are heading up to Sacramento and then Monterey for the World Superbike race in July and we will be taking my 8. I'm curious to see what kind of mileage mine gets. I track my mileage on Fuelly but I'm always doing a highway/city mix and have a hard time keeping my foot out of it while accelerating. This is a great car for on ramps when traffic is sparse

The 27mpg was when we were mostly in a downhill leg of the long trip, but definitely hovered around 24-25 for the average of the whole. I did stay pretty close to the speed limit. The 8 gets too much 'attention' from traffic police, combined with instant on radar detection, I kept off the pedal unless I was on a long stretch where I could see that we wouldn't be tagged for our momentum. Back around town again in Eugene, I'm seeing the typical 17-18mpg in the city.
As long as you had fun, that's all that matters

In a few minutes, just after midnight, I'll head down to the garage to replace the A/C belt and install the drive belt.

Went to SCCA Track Night in America last night. Ran with the intermediate group and decided to sign up with the advanced group next time. My new front sway bar and slightly raised ride height worked very well in further balancing the car. The only time I found myself fighting excess oversteer was when my tires got greasy.
I also recorded some good data points on coolant temperature to compare with what I will record 2 weeks from now after my radiator upgrade.
A very cool red RX-7 was in attendance, and it was a lot of fun talking to its owner and generally being a rotard. I was also a lot of fun beating the pants off dozens of much faster cars.
Somehow I managed to forget to take any pictures this time. D'OH!

I installed the Sohn adapter today along with Epitroch's eBay support kit. It got a little frustrating at times, but I got it done and it seems to not leak. Now I'm running Idemitsu for injection

It really isn't a mystery. Miatas do it all the time. RX-8s just do it better and with more style.
Take your average Mustang Boss 302 or whatever. Focus on driving a near perfect technical line. Maximize the strengths of your "slower" car. In this case, that means maintaining momentum and cornering at speeds that are 10-20mph faster than he can manage. Keep that up for 2 or 3 laps, and you have him dead to rights. He will probably drag you around for another lap or two as he works through his denial, but you will eventually pass him.
How does that work? Let's break it down.
1. If you can corner that much faster than he can, he has to use his power to first make up the difference in exit speeds, and then try to gain on you. But, you have been gaining speed during the time he has been trying to make it up, creating more ground for him to gain before he can actually use his power against you.
2. On a relatively short technical track, he won't have enough power to get it done on the available straights that are maybe 1,000 feet long.
3. You spend 90% of your money on seat time. He spends 90% of his money on upgrades to his car. Your money is better spent.
4. Given the above truths, all you have to do is consistently execute.
Out of the 50 or so cars that showed, only 3 gave me any real trouble. A Porsche GT3-RS, a fully built Lingenfelter Camaro ZL1, and a heavily modified Subaru STi. That is, IMHO, quite a testimony for such a "slow" car, and I don't even consider myself that good of a driver.
To add just a little bit more perspective, I started near the back of the grid for the first session and passed a lot of cars. For the second session, I started somewhere in the middle and passed a lot of cars. I decided to start first for the last session to see what might happen, and no one managed to pass me. The RX-8 can hold its own against anything on the right track. Period. Well, excepting a better driver in a Miata.

I vacuumed my cabin air filter today. One filter had a few small holes so I might buy a new filter. It was totally plugged up with stuff like pictured above. I wish I had take a before/after picture, but I just kept pulling more and more out. Gross!!!

MAF cleaning day
--------------------------------------------------
I didn't manage to get a before pic on the teardrop but it was completely coated in soot/gunk, after cleaning thoroughly, it should look like a nice translucent amber color, as follows.

Geez, what a bastard.
How old/miles was the belt, 200K?
I rigged up a bridge brace over that coil to 'try' and prevent the Alt belt from hacking into that coil wiring plug.

Finished upgrading the radiator to a Koyo HH series and replacing the coolant. Serviced the brakes again. Straightened the oil cooler fins. Getting her ready for another track day this Saturday.
