What is the best CONVENTIONAL oil???
 

I want to run conventional oil in my 8 and I plan on keeping it stock since my R3 has all I need. Does anybody know which conventional oil is the best if there is such a thing?

There are many threads about what oil to use. It comes down to personal opinion. search oil in the search bar and you will find lots of information

Use any name brand that meets the specs in the owner's manual. Buy it from a reputable store.

Castrol GTX seems to be the most popular brand among dino-ists here. Don't know if it's that good or if we just have a lot of John Force fans. Been using it myself for decades.

just check for the api rating in the rear if its sm thats the highest quality as of now, which castrol acheives, but there is penty of great oil out there

Sorry but this has literally been asked hundreds and hundreds of times.

I am a fan of Castrol GTX but as others have mentioned, it comes down to personal preference. Just make sure you are using an oil weight that is designed for your area and you'll be all set.

I've been using it ever since new and no problems so far (5w30, 61k miles).

I know I'll get flamed for it, but I might as well ask:

Why conventional oil? Any particular reason? You're aware Mazda specs 5w30 full-synthetic oil everywhere but in North America, right? It's not like they give us different engines here.

No, Mazda doesn't recommend full-synthetic and at times have recommended not using it. 5W20 is recommended, in the U.S. at least, for mileage and emissions reasons. Many have decided that that is too light of an oil for engine longevity and use a higher weight oil 5W30, 10W40, 20W50 & even diesel spec oils.

Castrol GTX myself as well. 5W-30 here in the cooler NE.

There's a reason I said "everywhere but in North America". It's possible that information is inaccurate, but I got it here so I'd hope it's at least more right than wrong.

SM rating does NOT mean its the highest quality. It just mean that it has met the "newest" requirement/spec. but does that mean these requirement/spec results in "higher quality" ? Nope.

For me, I prefer SL and sometimes, SJ Rated oil. and people that knows oil should know why.

It's inaccurate. They recommend weights other than 5w20 outside of North America. But the Australian owner's manual oil info I like to keep reposting (the one that shows a wide range of acceptable weights) rather explicitly says mineral oil only, no synthetic.

Personally, I don't see the value of using synthetic oil if you're changing the stuff every 3000 miles - unless those 3000 miles are at LeMans. ;)

Car now in 4th year - I have followed the manual and run Castrol 5-20 and change it often, and it is nice a cheap! Then I run a good 91+ gas, Chevron or shell, and it runs good - the only time I have flooded was when my battery ran low! But you really need to run this car, long and hard it likes running and only kicks when it's engine is not used.

If you read the forum Bob Is The Oil Guy, you'll find that even those fanatics say they don't care what conventional oil they use. They'll buy whatever is on sale, even if it's the Walmart brand, which is called Supertech. They say even Supertech is good oil. They say Motorcraft, Havoline, Valvoline, Castrol, Shell, Pennzoil, etc.- it doesn't matter.

Wow lots of castrol fans here lol, I use Royal Purple 5w20 but I'm probably going to switch to 10w30 or 5w30

that's easy.....the best oil is Mazda's own brand. Use it and everything will be fine. DO NOT fall for the premix bullshit and all the other stupid gadgets or magic oils on sale here...I swear there are vendors on this site, or being paid to promote the stuff!
Don't use synthetics....how many time u need telling, Mazda tells you over and over again. Not only a waste of money, also totally unsuited to this very low stressed engine. :mdrmed:
