There's no such thing as a tune-up any more. Tune up used to mean new plugs and points, and set the timing. Maybe a few other odds and ends, like adjusting idle speed and mixture. Used to be a once a year thing.

Nowadays plugs last for years, there are no points, timing is contuously adjusted by the ECU, and your can't adjust fule injection idle mix and speed even if you wanted to.

Dealers have various 5k, 10k, 30k, whatever, packages. They're not standard. Usually they include various fluid changes. When the time came to change my transmission and rear end oil, I paid about $500 for my dealer's 30K package that changed those, plus brake fluid and coolant, plus a worthless fuel injector cleaning, plus checking spark plugs. And the usual "Full Circle" inspection items. I gave them a set of new plugs (cost $80) and they installed them at no extra charge.

Somewhat of a premium price, especially compared to DIY, but I didn't have the time and inclination to do it myself.

Not sure if you are the DIY type, but in terms of prices for parts, I just bought NGK plugs/wires and coils (Intermotor N3H1-18-100B-9U) for $274.95 shipped: http://cgi.ebay.ca/2004-2008-Mazda-R...item45f8fb1936

I thought that was a pretty good deal, and it seems that the Intermotor coils are exactly the same as Mazda OEM based on other threads I've read here. Here's how the prices compared to what I was quoted when I called a part store locally (Ottawa):

Plugs: $27 each
Wires: $72 for the set
Coils: $92 each
Total: $548

At 72K on a vehicle you have never driven your tune up could be substantial. What kind of history do you have on the car? How much do they want? How many owners? Whats recently been checked or replaced. How are the tires and brakes. How is the ignition system. Whats the condition of the AC system, and air intake. Was the cat ever replaced? Is there a Check Engine Code? Don't just look at the dash. You need to hook up an OBDII scanner and check. People get creative like pulling the bulb for the check engine light.
