Went to the Dragon got a engine light

Weill I went to Deal's Gap this weekend to run the Dragon. As soon as I got up there and the temperatures dropped I started to get an engine cel. It is when I start the car in the morning. I went by an AutoZone and I got a P0201 or P2001, I cannot remember. AutoZone said it was a manufacture code only and could not tell me what it meant.

A buddy of mine and I replaced the coils, wires, and plugs, then cleard the code. I was planning on doing that anyways while I was up there. The car runs great now. However, I got the cel again the next morning and this morning. It seems to go away after a few starts. Keep in mind I had the cell before I did the tune up so I'm certain it is nothing I did while I had it apart.

I might have to drop it by the shop today. It kind of sucks because the car runs like new, it starts fast and purrs like a kitten. Below are some pics of the old coils and plugs as you can see they need to be changed.

Neither engine code are "Mazda only". Since the CEL has popped up again, go get it read again and google that code for the answer.
The white mark on the bottom of the coil is not an indicator of a bad coil. The only good way is to use a grounded spark gap (eg spark plug clipped to ground) to see if it is firing. TeamRX8 has a thread on such a device that is available for purchase.

Well weather the coils were damaged are not I got the upgraded versions. The ones that were in the car were original. I was planning on getting the cel read on the way home from work.

http://www.motorweek.org/features/go...spark_testing/

"Alright, so suppose the plugs are good, we still have a problem, what do we do? Well we do what technicians tell you can't be done, we check the ignition coils. And we do that with a simple spark tester for less than ten bucks from the auto parts store. We plug it into the end of the coil where the plug would normally be, we take the ground wire, connect it to a good ground on the engine, and we reconnect the wires that power up the coil. Then, we start the engine. And what we're hoping to see here is a good strong spark, such as we have here. If we have that good strong spark, good."

EightCostsMoney 09-19-2011 07:59 AM

It is a MR2 with a kit but not to look like Porsche. It is the Top Secret kit.

Bigbacon 09-19-2011 09:25 AM

Looks more like a Porsche to me.

fyrstormer 09-19-2011 09:56 AM

It looks nothing like a Porsche. What are you guys talking about?

8upbad 09-19-2011 10:15 AM

I've had a few Mr2's, that car is fun but if you lose control there is no recovering.

EightCostsMoney 09-19-2011 10:21 AM

200.mph 09-19-2011 02:06 PM

so is it the uim?

EightCostsMoney 09-19-2011 02:20 PM

What is uim?

200.mph 09-20-2011 07:27 AM

upper intake manifold, the black plastic parts. the reason i asked about nitrous is that some have blown up the uim (not the engine) from impropper use. also i have a spare that i might part with

EightCostsMoney 09-20-2011 07:32 AM

The dealer is quoting me $2700 bucks to replace the manifold. Seems there is a stuck valve or something. My warranty company is coming buy to inspect the bad part and I hope it is covered by my extended warranty if not I'm going to have to fix this thing myself. What bad week for this to happen, I am moving this weekend! The code ended up being a P2004. I did notice before that I got the marble in the can issue at 6k RPM range before this happened. I was hoping the tune up would have taken care of it. Seems I had a bigger problem on my hands.

EightCostsMoney 09-20-2011 07:37 AM

Thanks for the reply! I'm not sure if it is the upper or lower. I''ll see what they say and get back to you, I migh take it off your hands.

stuck valve is prob the ssv and its in the lower part. if its not covered jon g has a great diy for checking and i believe replacing lim parts. i think someone is selling a new ssv in the fs section. hope this helps, keep us posted. sry to hear about your 8, seems you have a few problems since you got it

EightCostsMoney 09-20-2011 07:56 AM

Yeah I would be regretting the purchase but I had too much fun up at the dragon. Love the car, hate the issues! If I did not have warranty this car would be sold.

200.mph 09-20-2011 07:59 AM

what warranty company? sry btw its jon316g that made all the great diy vids if you need to find them gl

EightCostsMoney 09-20-2011 08:04 AM

I got an extended warrinty from my bank when I bought the car. They have been really good so far covering the repairs. Best $1000 I ever spent.

EightCostsMoney 09-21-2011 06:57 AM

I still not heard back from the Warranty Company. I plan on going by the dealer today and have a compression test done. I just found out my factory warranty runs out on the engine this October. I know this nothing to do with my Cel code but better be safe than sorry.

So odd to see these words written with the forum name that you have, and with the signature line that you have.

You complain about having to spend money on your car, and complain about having to have to fix parts on this car all the time, but it was you who chose to buy a used car in the first place.

You really should have gone through the entire car with a fine toothed comb to suss out issues like the SSV valve shortly after you bought it.

If you get denied for the warranty repair by the company, search for the SSV cleaning video, and clean it yourself before you pay anyone $2500 to replace the upper intake manifold.

BC.
