Weird sound coming from behind center console...
First, I apologize if this is in the wrong section.
I have an 07 RX8 6 speed with about 41,000 miles on it. Recently the car started making a sound whenever I accelerated. It goes away when the car is in neutral or stopped at a light while in gear. The best way to describe the sound is it sounds like running water, a CD spinning, or if wind was getting into the engine bay some how. It comes from behind the center console/glove box area. I've also noticed a trend that I notice it more often during cold weather. Can anyone help me out with this? What is this sound? I'm worried it might develope into a bigger problem. Thanks a lot. |
It's fluid rushing through the heater core. Entirely common to all RX-8s, and gets more noticeable as ambient temperatures drop.
The RX-8 is quiet enough that you can hear it (and/or less sound absorbing materials). It isn't hurting anything, there are no concerns of damage or eventual failure, and "fixing" it is a very costly procedure where the dealer will install baffles in the coolant route to eliminate the noise. |
Thank god that's all it is! I appreciate the quick and detailed response!

That's what that is? Lmfao! I have heard it a few times and was wondering what it could be. I heard it only with the a/c on though. When it got colder and I stopped using the a/c, it stopped.

Never heard and never had this problem. If its a common problem, then it should be on the TSB lists.

Sigh @ Monchie.
It isn't a problem any more than hearing the wind noise by driving on the highway with the windows down is a problem. |
Glad to hear its normal. I did that throttle body coolant line removal DIY and was starting to think that sound was coming from the fitting where I joined the hoses.
