Weird Question For You Guys

I have noticed that the little flapper in the gas tank tube that you usually push down with the nozzle at the gas pump is not on my car, is there one on other RX-8's? There has always been one on other cars I have owned, just wondering if this one was different and not there, or the person who owned the car before me broke it off.

Don't have one on my 8.

Funny, I also happened to notice yesterday while refueling that my RX-8 did not have one compared to other cars I've had.

Good I am glad now, this means mine isn't broken.

The flap is to make it difficult for people to siphon gas. RX8's burn through gas too fast
to siphon. :-)

I do not and my Nissan Quest I used to have did not.

Flapper not needed. But if your gas-cap is not securely snug you will pop a CEL like most OBDII cars. :(

done that about 20 times on my last car...it will drive you crazy :p :D
with the 8 I'm too careful ;)

The flap is actually a safety device. It is to prevent fuel being blown out under air pressure inside the fuel tank when someone opens the cap. Most fillers come into the side of the tank to some extent or are shaped in a way that it is possible for air presure inside the tank to push fuel out the filler. Since this is a know problem, Mazda must have shaped the tank and filler so that this isn't possible. If not they could have a big law suit if someone, especially smoker, gets fuel over them.

Always wondered why it wasn't there .... good info

my guess is that it was an attempt for our foreign competiters at mazda to see if anyone would really notice....

I'm having to get used to not topping it off.

I figured those flaps were to keep the gas cap from hitting the body and keep fuel from spilling on the paint... good info
