But seriously

I'm not quite sure you want to weight reduct the 8, in all honesty the 8 is going to be a nice drag car if your able to get the new RENSIS above 500 horse, which is totaly possible but not proven yet. With the suspositly "perfect" 50/50 weight distrubtion the rear wheels with get plenty of traction.

The only things really i will suggest is a poly urethan front end (if you add a wing)

Removing the 2 back seats (add a nitrous tank)

Make the front 2 seats and all interior Sparco/carbon fiber

Remove the air conditioner is the only "weight reduction" that might favor.

Seriously

Phyre,

There are other reasons to reduce weight other than drag racing. Namely to improve agility, braking, fuel efficiency, emmissions, safety, etc.

However, I think it is a bit early to speculate what should be done to reduce weight. Do we even know what material the suspension, hood, etc are made of? How about what gadgets will be added to the car?

I don't think aiming for 1000lb less is entirely reasonable, unless you're willing to swap out a ton of parts for their lighter counterparts.

At ~3000lb curb weight, just losing 600lbs will bring you into Miata territory. One issue with just losing weight is if you strip out weight from one section of the car without consideration for the rest, you lose the ~50-50 balance of the car.

I assume you found this thread through search. Keep looking around, I'm sure there was a mention of a very stripped out 8 that pretty quick.

I know this is an old thread but I believe lossing pounds is the best way to go but the problem is it's not easy to drop... say 300 pounds in the RX-8 because they [Mazda] have already done alot to keep it close to 3000 pounds.

Removing power seat can save about 50 to 60 pounds....

I'm not entirely sure what I'd have to lose in order to get myself lower in the weight region. I guess taking out the rear seats, some carpet/sound deadening...spare tire, racing seats, it seems they did a pretty decent job at keeping the weight at what it is, and since I have the Sport Model, I don't have a lot of the fancy pants things that you GT guys have

There's a difference between removing stuff and replacing stuff. You can easily remove out your rear seats, audio system, AC system, miscellaneous carpeting/interior bits, spare tire, emergency jack, spoiler, etc.

But a lot of it would involve swapping out for lighter stuff (and that you really need to research on. Go with 17" wheels, and you'll make up at least 5lbs each wheel. Carbon fiber sections are generally 50% less weight than the stock counterparts. Your front seats can be swapped out with lightweight racing seats as well. Other stuff to swap out include the battery, cat, catback, intake, and radiator. I'm pretty sure all this would add up to at least 500lb. It's just really expensive =x

An alternative to CF would be fiberglass version, which still saves a large percentage of weight, but is much cheaper.

For the average American, that would be a significant weight reduction for their cars.

Well you could always drive around with less than a 1/2 a tank of gas.

This is a pretty hilarious post lol

http://cscc.speedracer.ca/forums/ind...topic=3696.new

Just to let you know Bill Schenker's CSP NB Miata weighed in at 1970 lbs. His car has RIDICULOUSLY lightweight Bogart wheels that would bend like cardboard on the streets. Seeing how that Miata required ALOT of cutting of the actual car (to make the car go from stock 2200+ pounds to 1970 pounds).

I don't get how you guys are getting these numbers of just magically dropping 400-600 lbs off a car. It takes serious trimming of body parts and even bits off the frame to achieve something like that (albeit extra bracing added, but with lighter weight materials).

I've met Bill in the past and I know his CSP Miata is only for the Auto X track. Never ever driven on the streets for obvious reasons.

No CF hoods, panels, and doors will even get you close to that number of 400-600 lbs.
