are we a target??

the other day i was stopped at red light and a f-150 pulled next to me and screeches off as soon as light turned green, then he cuts me off and starts waving(mockingly) at me! WTF!!! and its not the first time a car(mostly civics and integras w/ coffee cans) caught me off guard. it seems like driving my rx8 means losing a race i didn't even know i was in...

winter 02-25-2004 10:09 PM

The rx8's the new kid on the block, and his older brother had quite a reputation. Seems pretty natural that people are going to want to put it to the challenge.

Still, at least it's better than driving a 'vette. Then everyone revs on you.

Murray16 02-25-2004 10:44 PM

That's what I don't like. I don't have an 8 yet (month or so...) but whenever I'm in my celica theres always a kid that pull up besides me in their nearly-stock civic and revs. I'll admit to actually doing something about it. I doubt that after I get my 8 I'll even bother too look at the other driver. (when I get it out of my system :P)

I like how theres civics out there that can beat Ferraris and Porsches, etc. .... but at the end of the day ITS STILL A CIVIC!!!!

So remember, they are the retards that put money into a $15K car to make it faster or drive better. And you are the intellegent individual that is driving a fast, nimble car... that has the looks.

"Racing a civic is like the special olympics - even if you win, you're still retarded!"

winter 02-25-2004 11:22 PM

Wow, such open-mindedness, and from a celica driver no less.

A friend of mine is one of those "retards" who put money into a $15k car to make it faster or drive better. Civic hatch with a B18c swap. Not a quarter mile monster (although I've witnessed him run a 13.6 @ Carlsbad, all motor), but a car that's street-driven hours to road courses, where he races all day and then drives home.

Yes, it's still a civic. A civic that would trounce my rx-8 around Laguna Seca and in the quarter mile.

rotarygod 02-25-2004 11:27 PM

I'll put my little old 1st gen RX-7 against that Civic. He won't beat me!

winter 02-25-2004 11:29 PM

Haha, I'll let ya know next time we go to a track day. Just need to pick up some fresh tires for my miata.

Zeltar 02-26-2004 01:24 AM

This is an easy one to solve. Go easy off the line. Then they get pissed that you didn't think them worthy of a race, or didn't get the clue that they wanted to race. But, hey, grow up - you're not at the local drag strip. If they want results, they should look it up in a magazine.

You need to run your Miata against his Civic on an auto-x track. Those Miatas can humble most of the big boys out there quite easily. The little first gen does pretty well out there too. Both cars are like go carts. Lots of fun. Of course mine also has a snail under the hood which is great for other places. It doesn't really help in an auto-x much though. Snails are slow right? ;)

I wasn't bashing his Civic. That's what I have for a daily driver.

Outlaws eXtreme 02-26-2004 01:31 AM

I asked my neighbor how fast he's driven in his Ferrari Modena... and he said "80" I was like uhhh not faster? Then he said.. I already know how fast it can go... I want the chicks to see my car, not pass them by. So ya.. I would prefer the ladies to see the 8.

Besides, that fixed up Acosta RX-8 would beat the 15k+ civic modded car. Both fixed up right?

Still running stock compression?

At any rate, he'd also work me around an auto-x course, not just because his car is lighter and better set up, but because he's a better driver.

Edit: I should probably note he's running a full race suspension.

Most F series truck drivers drive like *ssholes anyway, at least where I live and work, so don't think too much of it.. They'll do that without any cars next to them.

But I understand your point about being a target. They're just envious we have a better looking sportscar.

Overport 02-26-2004 08:39 AM

just race 'em...get you and your cars rep up....let people know about it.

I do the same or just sit there for a couple second as if they are not even worth my time. except when i have my audi with the AWD i would dust (nearly) everyone through the intersection. I did however pick my battles you know ice, frost or rain. the quattro system always gave me great traction.

Whoa whoa whoa...what gives winter? You referred to the rx8 as a he in your first reply. Do you have something you want to tell us?

winter 02-26-2004 12:19 PM

LOL! Some rx8's are male, some are female. As a species, I use the male pronoun (similar to "man" landing on the moon). My particular example, however, is certainly female.

nt5k 02-26-2004 04:28 PM

Ignore them and they go away.. Had the same crap when I had the wrx.. Not like you get a cookie for 'winning'..

93rdcurrent 02-26-2004 04:46 PM

I wouldn't know since I always win ;) . I haven't had anything serious to race but I like the sticker mods a lot of the kids around here have. I don't think that the extra 15hp that MSD sticker gave the Integra I raced yesterday enough oomph to catch up to me.

TM45 02-26-2004 05:19 PM

I am very old and drive like a granny, but not a day goes by where I don't have a race at at least six stoplights. Pickup trucks, civics, Corvettes, 350Z's it doesn't matter. Some speed up from behind and slow down to have a look.

Off the road, people come up and ask me about the car. Young people joke about wanting a ride or trading cars.

I like to drive and the car greatly appeals to me, but I hadn't anticipated this reaction.

Alright, fair enough :D

Killerking1964 02-26-2004 06:03 PM

No offense, nut mine is definately a male! (since I am female) I can blame any problem on him!!! hehe.I named him Little Boy after the bomb we dropped on Hiroshima. (Since I am from the Atomic City). After all, as we gals say, "if it has tires or testicles, it will give you problems"! I just had to say that!!!!!

Yea, but the best part is watching those type of guys sink into their driver seat when they hear my exhaust.:D

mjd 02-26-2004 06:40 PM

I've had my RX-8 for about two weeks now, and have had people come up beside me on the highway wanting to race. I didn't buy this car to race, and I'll never do it, but I do find it kind of amusing. At least it means the car is getting attention.

I was harassed once by a truck during 9.5 years I had my Accord. I have had my RX-8 for one month and its happened three times, two of them were on the expressway, one in the city similar to what you described. I haven't had any other cars try provoke anything. In a different event, I had a truck blast his horn when I was right in front of him. He was at a stop sign and I was on a multilane road. Anyway it sure got my attention.

I hadn't really pondered that this could be a truck driver pattern. I know many people with trucks, and they don't seem to be the harass types.

Elara 02-26-2004 07:36 PM

Not only does every civic, GTi, and Mustang think they need to show off for me, but my car seems to be a magnet for stupid people in large vehicles. So far, I've had a cargo van try to back out of a space as I was driving by, a minivan do the same in the post office parking lot, and a pickup try and pull over on top of me in an otherwise empty lane. All three times they missed me by inches. Is this car THAT invisible???

Nope. It just so happened that those drivers' brains were inversely proportional to their vehicles.

:p

Trx8 02-26-2004 07:52 PM

Elara --

Our van has been hit twice while it was stopped near the main doors of stores. Evidently the car becomes invisible, and cars run into it, fortunately at slow speed. After they hit it, it becomes visible, complete with visible damage. In both cases the other driver's insurance company paid for the repairs, including our deductible.

A friend of mine has a similar problem. His presence causes the vehicle to become invisible. This happens when we drive in his van, or when he was in my old Accord. I am somewhat leery of driving with him in my 8.

That must be it. I make the car invisible. Maybe I should paint it bright orange and plaster flags all over- perhaps that would help?

Argh. I really hate stupid people.

80CuIn 02-26-2004 09:05 PM

Actually Elara, if we are the ones making our 8s invisible, maybe we should paint ourselves orange (just kidding).

I have almost 5k on my 8 and one has challenged me to a race. That's when being invisible is at it's best.

That punk in Civic may leave me alone, but the Mack truck will certainly hit me when I turn the corner.

alphapenguin 02-26-2004 10:14 PM

if n e one revs next to u, that means just go slower. As they zoom, just hope a cop gets them:-D Not worth getting ticketed.

Murray16 02-26-2004 11:14 PM

Winter:

My words about the civic were off key. I'm sorry. I just get upset because were i live there are civics everywhere with the same standard mods: intake, exhaust, and eurolights. They always get really cocky and try to race me. I'm twenty years old so I usually know most of these kids. When I see them later they try to piss me off because I wouldn't go em.

I know there civics out there that are rockets. And I respect them because they usually have the same mentality as the average 8 owner here... they know how fast theyre car is.... so why bother?

winter 02-26-2004 11:32 PM

Dun sweat it. I live in Mira Mesa, not a day goes by that I don't see a fartcan equipped civic with an ill-fitting primer-colored bodykit drive by my house. I've had kids rev on me while I'm in the driveway washing the car. Remember that not everyone who mods a civic is a ricer... just the majority. ;)

Murray16 02-27-2004 04:07 PM

LOL!

Youre absolutely right. I had an encounter today. I can't stand the ricers.

Omicron 02-27-2004 04:42 PM

This is a fine thread folks, let's just be careful to not let it degenrate into a "street racing" thread. It'd be a pity to have to make it go byebye.

MaHogoff 02-28-2004 09:19 PM

Fact of life. People get mad at nice cars they can't own. They don't know the Rx-8 is very affordable. The guys took a poll at my tire place on how much I spent. The general concensus was $38K. They were eyebrow-raised at my $25K payout.

But the jerks on the road? Doesn't matter who is driving the Rx-8. Especially if you blow by them like they are standing still and their woman just dumped them and they try to catch you in their '96 Cavalier. Tee. Tee-hee.

Berni 02-29-2004 09:15 PM

Targets

Got my 8 Saturday... anyway today this kid in a celica(done up nicely.) followed me on the way home , flashing light a waving out the window...(I decide not to go near my house) i redirect to a better road for ..i guess escape options. he pulls up next to me and is yelling something..so i partially put my window down and reduced speed to a spoint were i could either brake or excellerate without breaking the law. He again shouted " What did that cost?" annoyed by his oviosous ignorance of the internet and car magazine, i simply replied with equal ignorance stating "sorry it is not for sale" I mea who the hell has this type of conversation drive down the road... or did he actually think i would stop and chit chat. this is the place for that, i mean we here are all willing participant in the conversation. anyway through out the day I had my fill of reving cameros and mustangs, as well as motorcycle sounding imports stairing at me. All of them very concerned with me only doing the speed limit when they were ready to see what the 8 could do. I guess the silliness has begun for me. Maybe i will start snaping thier picture and start a geek of the week web site.

done venting thatnks
