Watch out new owners of an ICON!

Well, this is my first experience in owning a sought after "sports car" and the attention has been phenominal as I shared in another area on this board; however, today I went to get gas and shop at a local auto store for a car cover. The front of the store was solid glass (so I noticed three guys around my car).
I completed my questioning with the sales girl and started out when one of the guys started in the door and asked If that was my car out there. Then he told me how much they admired it - really admired it and walked out and across the parking lot. I looked and the car seemed okay. Took it to a friends house to show off and found it was keyed on the driver's side front fender! I plan on looking into that alarm upgrade with shock sensing right away and I will be glad when more of these are on the road.

Your story pisses me off to no end  What in the hell would posess(sp) someone to do that . Was it a bunch of kids? (not that it really matters) I mean come on "ooohhhh its pretty....lets key it hahahah," bunch of fuggers. I am not a big fan of violence, but in this case a healthy ass kicking would be A-ok with me.

You should see if they have a security camera that may have recorded it.

I think the plate number was "Converse" or "Nike". Anyway, that is royally screwed and has me pissed off too. I am already paranoid but I guess I will have to be even more so. Sorry about that Rod. What is the cost to repair something like that, I guess you have to repaint the entire fender panel?

RodsterinFL 07-26-2003 10:52 PM

It was a Western Auto with a large parking lot. The one who spoke to me got in a black Expedition or Excursion whatever - BIG and BLACK. it was too far away and I did not realize. The other two were walking around I guess. There is not a lot you CAN do. Just any newbies like me, be cautious park carefully especially while they are so unique.

RodsterinFL 07-26-2003 10:55 PM

Now I will no have a purpose for the touch up paint. I do not believe that the fender will need repainted. The "through the paint" part is like a chip and I was able to buff the scratching part out. I wiil check it out in the sun tomorrow.

billdo 07-26-2003 10:59 PM

Rod,
Thats the part that pisses me off the most. That there is really nothing you can do about in now. These chicken shits have no respect for others property and get off on destroying other's things. Could it have happened earlier, or are you positive it occured when you were at western auto? I mean, it could be possible some camera caught it, who knows? You may be able to get some kinda discription, plate, etc. I just wish you could have caught that bastard.

RodsterinFL 07-26-2003 11:21 PM

I know what you mean about catching them. I have experienced 5 car vandalisms since I bought my first car years ago and ironically our area's most frequent crime is - car theft/vandalism. I just guess it is a lesson in realizing that although we enjoy nice things in life that we must understand that they are only THINGS.

Yes it happened either there or on the way. We looked at it thoroughly when I got home and at first I thought it might possibly be a rock (the chip part) but then that did not explain the scratching and linear marks. I only went to gas the car and the store so...

It will be fine. I have never owned something though with so much magnetism. It was the first one delivered in the area so hopefully this parking lot gathering, blowing and yelling carside, etc will die down. It was cool at first and now it is uh, $sobering$.

ReX-8 07-27-2003 12:04 AM

Sorry to hear about that..... feel terrible..
After reading abt the story, it makes me kinda feel worry abt that too. I think I need to get a garage and park it inside instead of the lot where I'm living. Plus I'm planning to get the shock sensor upgrade too, make me feel (at least slightly) safer.

mantisflie 07-27-2003 12:16 AM

Dude, that sucks Rod. Sorry to hear about that. Just make sure that you don't get all bitter or start hating. Whoever did that has alreadly caused enough headaches and damage. Don't let them succeed in doing continued damage by getting to you. It sounds like your'e taking it pretty well, but as you said, it's just a think. Not worth bursting a blood vessel over. :D Of course if it had been my car, I'd be out stalking them right now with my sniper rifle and repay them royally! J/K :D :D

mantisflie 07-27-2003 12:18 AM

Wow! That post stinks!! Should have reviewed the grammatical stuff BEFORE I posted!:D

What a disgusting act of vandalism byy a bunch of losers suffering from RX-8 envy. Thanks for forewarning us. Montreal is not particularly known for such acts (though it probably happens from time to time). After I pick up my RX-8 from the dealer next week, I will be extra careful where I park my icon.

delhi 07-28-2003 10:53 AM

sorry about that. stuff like these happens to cars that stands out from the rest. I know of some ppl who's car been egged too! And that was just by being parked on his own driveway!!!

A little off-topic, but this is why I am very hesitant to get a personalized plate.

For example: In a similar situation, if someone keyed a car, and a little later I walked up and admired it, and the owner only saw me, he would assume that I was the one who keyed it. If the owner didn't notice the damage until after I left, he might remember "BLU-RX8", but most likely not something like "R7U-SR3".

Horrible stuff...I know a friend of a friend that has a Supra TT. Two guys in a Mustang tried to get him to race for a few miles down the highway. He wouldn't give in, which apparently pissed them off immensely. When the guy parked his Supra in the lot at a local mall, the guys in the Mustang keyed his car in several places. (There was no proof it was the guys in the Mustang, but logic seems to support it.)

Bottom line is people are going to do these things no matter what we have done to our cars, or how careful we try to be.

Excellent point and never thought of it that way. I never was one to actually get a personalized plate but lately i've been thinking of how interesting it would be to get one when my 8 comes in. Your point makes me change my mind - thanks.

Rod - sorry about your car and hopefully you wont have to endure any more immature pranks by immature ppl.

mikeb 07-28-2003 01:19 PM

I feel your pain. I know everyone saying they are sorry doesn't fix your car BUT I'M SORRY that happened. Whoever did that is just pissed you have a bad ass car and they probably take the bus.

blizz81 07-28-2003 05:50 PM

Man, that's rough...a quick trip to the store, even. I'm sorry...I suppose your luck could be worse though :)

For all those making garage comments, I don't see how you could NOT garage an 8. If it wasn't possible (ie availability, all other reasons besides $, etc) I wouldn't personally consider a brand new sporty $30k car. Even back when I lived with my parents and had my 10-year-old integra, I had to make a deal with them to help clean out the garage if I could park there :)

cueball 07-28-2003 05:55 PM

I wonder if that GS-27 scratch remover actually works? I see it on TV all the time and for 20 bucks it would be a hell of a lot cheaper than having a body shop fix it.

Does anyone have any experience with this product?

Quick_lude 07-28-2003 06:04 PM

I feel your pain.. My car got keyed on the weekend.. Immature "haters".. People just don't have respect for others property..

seikx8 07-29-2003 09:43 PM

Well, to make anyone feel better or worst, I become another victims of the RX8 hater; got 3-4 inch keyed stretch on the driver front fender and I don't think the touch up paint will fix it! If I ever catch the person, I will beat the hell out of him/her ;) But for now, I'm just enjoy the ride and it's a pitty to those who are so jealous!

Spining Ncnratr 07-30-2003 07:28 PM

JELOUSY!!! Thats what it boils down to. You have something they can never have so they go and try and ruin it for you so you can not enjoy it. Pure childish behaivor. Hope its not to bad for you to fix it up.

Canada 07-30-2003 07:53 PM

Quick_Lude, what did they key? I thought you were getting your RX-8 in 2004.
