want to bring 42" hdtv home. Possible?
 

So I purchased an 42" Plasma HDTV over the weekend, but the catch is that this TV is 70 miles away from me.

I'd like to pick it up tonight, and not have to wait until the weekend to borrow someone's car.

Dimensions for the box, if anyone has a tape measure:

some preliminary measures indicate that, with the passenger seat lying complete flat, I will not be able to put the TV box in the car. The height from the headrest(lying flat) to the ceiling measures only 25" or so.

There is plenty of space lengthwise (measured from the dashboard to the rear seat).

my plan of attack is to:

1)lay seats completely flat
2)angle box so that the base of the box lies against the passenger door
3)box will lay north (dash) to south (rear seats)
4)it will angle from the armrest of the passenger doors to the driver's seat head rest like this

I'll take pics of my success/failure.

I might say just take out the passenger seat...

I fit an entertainment set in my car once....anything is possible

If you take it out of the shipping box and wrap it in bubble wrap or towels it should just fit with the passenger seat fully reclined.

I had the same problem when I bought my last TV, damn thing didn't even fit in my SUV (62" of HD goodness)

Home Depot / Lowes can rent you trucks by the hour, I went with that option since the Lowes was in the same shopping center but seeing as how your'e 70 miles away, I think something from U-Haul or Penske would be ideal.

Make sure you cover everything really well. So you can't find a cheap rental? How about paying off a friend with a bigger car? I looked into Lowes truck rental and you have to have bought something at Lowes...

box for TV is bigger than you think it will be....

I couldn't get a 50" plasma in my old Cobalt with it being in the box AND with the stand attached and the rear seat folds down, the trunk opening is bigger than the 8s, the back seat area is larger and the roof is higher...

I had to remove the stand and the box and lay it flat in the trunk. We tried the angle ideas and everything. it was the only way.

You are going to have lots of trouble getting in there. Your angle idea might work if you take it out of the box and remove the stand but thats not a very good way to transport it.

Get a rental or borrow a friend and his/her car.....trust me.

I just bought a 46" LCD and entertained the idea of trying to get it home by putting it in the trunk. Of course, part would stick out and it would have been strapped down. The stopper was the realization that the center would be unsupported and there would be stress on the top/bottom of the TV. I used my son's 300z to bring it home.

that's odd, they never questioned it when I told them I needed it to take home a TV. :dunno:

I'd rent something, but between renting a small SUV from enterprise at $80 (plus gas provisions for a 140 mile trip), or a Uhaul van ($20, plus $.59/mile or $82.6), it would be cheaper for me to have them deliver it to my home ($100 to ship to my home).

This wouldn't be a problem if my Range Rover actually ran well, instead of making me second guess even short trips to the grocery store.

I'd take my significant other's RAV4, but due to time constraints, I won't have access to that until Saturday. BOO HISS!

that is correct - you are supposed to be required to buy something but it doesn't matter what you buy. i bought a bottle of gatorade and rented a truck from them to haul away some stuff.

Why rent?

Ask a buddy for a hand. Then thank him while watching the TV and drinking a cool one

yes, that is the easiest way but i think this assumes your friends don't have one to help you with. i know none of mine have trucks and the reason i had to rent.

Between friends and family there has to be somebody with a vehicle that can get this simple job done...

If not ---- well I guess your forced to rent which would seriously suck. Plus this guy is frpm Denver which as we all know is a snowy place in the winter. Somebody has to have a 4x4 Suv, cross over, pick up, dump truck, etc, etc.
