Used Rx-8?
 

Hey everybody, being that i am only 17 and my parents are buying me a car, i cannot afford a brand new rx-8. however, i am determined to get this car. I love rotaries and furthermore love the rx-8. What i was wondering is, do u think that the 8 will be available used anywhere from january-march 05? and if so, how much do u think that they'll go for? :confused:

Just grab an FD...they've come way down in price....sub 15k. A year ago I couldn't see one for under 20k (that was decent).

I've always wanted an FD, but because of reliablity issues, and 2 seats i have found that it's not the car for me. The FD is more of a dream car for me, or possibly a massive future project car. :D

If you really want a rotary you should look into a FC or second generation RX7. They can be had for as little as $4000 and for 7k you can get a very nice example.

I would stay away from the third gen RX7 due to the extremely high matainence costs.

I would guess that in 2005 the cheapest example of a RX8 would still be upwards of 20 grand, but I could be wrong.

I also in the past direly wanted the FC but my parents hate the fact that the car is over 15 years old. So the FC was also out of the question.

I'm seriously hoping you are right about the price though haha. 20-23k is the exactly the range i was looking for :D

as little as $4000? Yeah, most likely for a S5 TII.. but you can find FC's for even half that price in great running condtion. It's definitely a great fun car. As far as them coming up used, it may be possible but it would be hard to tell how much prices will come down 6 months from now because it depends on many factors... My guess is that the RX-8 will still keep a pretty good value because, unlike the 350z, it's unlikely there will be a convertible for awhile.

For most cars you can pretty much say you will lose about 20% of the car's value the millisecond you drive it off the lot, and the value will be about 70-75% of MSRP in the best situation once that model year's production ends.

For a hot car like the RX-8 depreciation may be a bit lower, but given your time frame I would say by 2005 the initial rush of RX-8 buyers will have one so selling prices will be around (MSRP - 10%) new, driving the prices of used vehicles down further.

As an example of this, take the 2003 Porsche Boxster S; a well-equipped one lists for about $63K. Many dealers offer 5% - 10% off MSRP, making that same new car sell for about $57K, and the latest Manheim auction numbers show a used 2003 Boxster S with around 3,000 miles selling for about $43K. (A $20K drop seems like a lot, but if you do the math that's a bit over 68% of MSRP, which is right in the proper depreciation ball park.)

So price out what you want and do the math. :D

In my personal experience you always end up loosing money whether its a new car or a used one, give or take $1000-$2000 max. It's always a depreciating asset unless your car becomes a collectors item after 20 years and you have maintained it enough to sell it at a rediculously high price! For example i paid $16000 for my current 1998 model year car back in 2000 when it had 28000 miles on it. I put about 45000 miles on it in approx 3 years and its market value is about $7000 at best. So i am loosing $9000 + the interest I've been paying over last 3 years. I believe that if I had bought a brand new car back in 2000 I would still be loosing about the same amout of money. So superrex, if total price is the issue then wait till 2005 otherwise just go and get one! Cheers!

Thnx for all the advice everybody. You all have given me new hope! I won't be able to buy the car before January because I've been a little slow at getting my license.:D Laziness has gotten the best of me. I get my license in November and turn 18 in January.

Who knows how much they will go for, but there should be some used RX8s available come early 2005. By then, I would guess that they should be available in the neighborhood for $20k.
