I drive an 04 GT MT, never had an earth shattering problem, just little annoying things like replacing steering clock spring, rear mirror, etc... and all covered under warranty.
Get the recalls done and I'd say you are pretty safe.

I have a 04AT... So far, so really good. I really like the car.
DO understand all warranty issues, recall issues, and basic maintenance issues before you buy.
Take care of it, once you buy it. For example, replace engine oil, engine filter, air filter, radiator fluid, check brake fluid, etc, etc...
Don't ignore maintenance on the RX-8 because those who do pay the price. Also don't ignore recall or warranty issues either or you will pay too.
