Update

I read a few posts on other sites that an update was released for the rx8, so that it wil run smoother. I have an 2005 rx8. Do I need the update?
My dealer knows not of such an update.
If there is one. How can I explain it to my dealer, and how can he find it?

Its been a while since Mazda released a ECU update, if there was a new one it would have been posted here so the other sites you are reading are not correct. Your also out of the basic warranty so you would have to pay for one anyway. I would however all Mazda USA with your VIN #. Ask them to verify that all of the recalls were preformed. That last one included an update that the dealer would still have to preform even on a out of warranty car.

Go to finishlineperformance.com and look for the RX-8 service bulletins. Find and print out the one for MSP-16. Next time you're at the dealer, show it to the service writer and ask if that had been done to your car.
