Underbody rust pictures, what you think?

Hey,

Purchased a rx8 a month ago, great car I love it, I want it to last another 8 years or so.

I live in ontario canada, lots of snow and salt here, so most of our cars are very rusted underneath. I had my rx8 undersprayed before winter and I went under the car after it was undersprayed to see how it looked, honestly it doesn't look too bad to me because my car before this was a 1997 mx-6 and it had a lot more rust underneath but i was wondering what you guys thought? I find I think a lot about it since I purchased the car because it really is by far the nicest car i've ever owned and I want it to last :)

Here is a link to my pictures shared on dropbox

Is it smart to maybe get underneath the car once summer comes and grind any rust i see off important spots and repaint those spots? is there any known shops that do this kind of work?

Thanks I appreciate any input

Looks very good to me, the only area that looked like it needs more treatment was the rear of the n/s fuel tank (and the jack could do with a spray!). An annual coat of Waxoil shoild keep it in good condition.

you mean your jack ?

Lots of corrosion there.

Looks normal for most cars... :dunno:

The corrosion isn't too bad on your car. From the stains in picture #4, it looks like you have a blown shock.

My car the rear fender is about to completely rust through.

wow that rust is terrible, so glad I live in autralia

You don't grind rust from such parts... You disassemble them, sandblast them and coat them again.

Thanks for the tips

Yeah i know the jack is rusted to shit lol, its only 2 years old and works great just got some water on it last year.

alnielsen, how can you tell it has a blown shock? the car handles great and doesn't make any weird noises so im hoping its ok, but in the future i will probably get all new struts and lowering springs.

bse50, the rust im worried about is rust on the frame peices, rust on changeable parts doesn't bug me

I think im just going to make sure it gets undersprayed before every winter and hope for the best :D I just wanted to get some second oppinions before upgrading the shit out of this car lol

The rear diff is not a jack point. This is why we can't have nice things

where would you place the jack to lift the whole rear end?

Carbon8 01-23-2013 05:54 PM

rear subframe, located right behind the rear diff

Quality feels fantastic, and the calipers are enormous however lighter than I thought. Kit comes with everything you need even nice new braided hoses... will post pictures once they're on!!!

Do take care of the rear wheel arches. Get it while you can before it gets too bad.
