Uhhhh Oh!
I am a little nervous right now.....in the manual it says the break-in period is about 600 miles, right now i have just over 200. the other day i was coming home from school and this hotshot in a Mustang GT (2002+) wanted to give me a run. So i did and was pushing the engine rather hard (as you would in a race). After i got home i was wondering if i hurt the engine or not by doing this because in the manual it also says "to preserve engine life do not race the engine, etc, before the break in period is over" Did i do a bad thing? does this mean my car might die on me early? Someone please help me out!

you should be fine. did you red line it? was it warmed up? you don't want to thrash the engine if it's not warmed up properly.
|
Re: Uhhhh Oh!
Don't worry about it. The manual is designed to cover Mazda's butt so people don't go out and beat on the car when new. A quick run here and there won't hurt the engine. Just avoid doing that if the engine is cold.
|
It was a colder day...probably around 58-60 degrees. But i was driving it for about fifteen minutes prior, so the engine was pretty warm.
|
You're going to throw a rod.
|
Ohhh....and i did redline it in 3rd gear...right before i put him away.
|
guy321, i am!
|
You'll be fine.. I did the same thing when I first got the car. It climbed to redline sooner than I expected, and I had the radio up loud so I didnt hear it.
|
Wheeew....thanks

Check your timing belt too.. It might have come loose in all the excitement.

Tell us the fun part....
So, what happen and you won? Simon. |
Which manual did you get that says 600mile break in?
Mine says there is no "break in" period but a suggested way of driving. |
On a related note.. I once dated a girl who was a CS major and she had her mail account on a VAX server. (back in the day) I told her to type rm -rf * as a joke, figuring she'd know better.. but she actually did it, and erased all her mail.. and SHE got mad at ME because I overestimated her knowledge about a platform she used regularly.
|
Just did...thankfully it looks ok.:o

i do that crap all the time...one of the girls in our tech support dept asked me what I use at home to get rid of spam...i told her all you have to do when your email app is up and you have incoming spam is, hold <alt> then F4...she actually went and did it and came back saying everytime she did that it closed Outlook...i laughed so damn hard...

So you won, right?
Lol. That's all that's important IMHO :b I get tech posts like that all the time and people regularly ask me how to fix their problems. I told one guy the answer to his win ME problem was a simple "format c: /u" and then type y and hit enter. Of course.. he did it. Regardless, after he got winME reinstalled 5 hours later (unconditional format on an 80 gig drive takes a LONG LONG time), he really was pissed. |
Wow all that time formating and STILL going back to Windows ME.
What a shame |
This was probably the most appropriate course of action!

Originally posted by Doug McGill Jr. Ohhh....and i did redline it in 3rd gear...right before i put him away. Street racing is absolutely, incredibly, stupid. Especially if you're reaching 90 or 100 mph. My money says the other guy just got less stupid before you did and shut down first, not that you "put him away". No excuses, it doesn't matter who revs at who - it's just pathetic and brainless. You seemed smarter than that in your prior posts. If you want to race - do it on a race track, not on the streets to massage your ego. Learn to control yourself - Idiot! (Said with the best of intentions) Regards, Gordon |
It seems like Gordon and jtimbck2 are taking care to tell others the dangers of street racing and point out it is against the club rules to write about it here.
As a trauma surgeon I am opposed to speeding and street racing. I have seen a lot of people killed in horrible high speed crashes. Some were merely mangled for life, paralyzed and such. It really is a blast to drive the 8 balls to the wall (aviation term I know but it works) but it is safer on a closed course, especially a racetrack where they clear it of FOD. And in that situation, if you crash, you will get help quicker and most likely not injure anybody else. I vote for high speed at a race track or closed course. I have a Mooney aircraft and have run my RX8 to 6600rpm and 130mph in 6th gear on a closed course (runway) at the airport. Try that at some small out of the way airport. The manager will usually be happy to help, especially if you offer him a spin in your 8. :) |
sounds like i am repeating the rest but i will say the same thing. the engine is fine. just be careful and wait out the 600 miles for the time being.
|
Sorry, no street racing stories.
