Transmission failure Plus Warranty Question

Hello All,

So I have a 2004 RX8 GT, about 65,000 miles. It's also manual Transmission. Ran great until I noticed the 4th gear won't shift properly or there was some resistance that was associated with a grinding sound as I tried to shift it. This has been like this for about half a year. It wasn't until last week that as I try to shift to the 6th gear, it won't shift AT ALL. I took it in to be checked by a local mechanic, and he said that the gear levels 4 and 6 are on the same plane. The gears wont lock in place properly so I would have to change the transmission
Now, transmission replacement is super expensive, I heard that Mazda increased the warranty to 100,000 miles/8yr. I usually don't deal with Dealerships, but how should I approach this. I'm sure, the dealrship wouldn't want to give a free transmission or motor that easily. Anyone else experienced this challenge?
Also, I sil have about 4grand left to pay off the RX 8, should I trade it in? My mechanic said that if he was to buy it, he would only pay $2000 and no more...so it looks like am at a loss either way unless, I can convince the dealership about the warranty.

Thanks for reading and any help is much appreciated

The 8yr/100k mile warranty only covers engine core.

You're on your own for the tranny.

Sorry but the extended warranty only covers the engine core.

Ok, looks like I would have to replace the transmission then. Do you think I can drive it on just 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gears without causing too much problem? I would need to save up for at least 3 months and obviously not drive as much.
Everything else is fine with the car, still looks nice and clean. How much would you sell it for with it's current condition? Just trying to get some ideas
Thanks again

Get a used transmission from a salvage yard, or from something like www.car-part.com. Looks like you can get them for as little as $500.

You can get a rebuild transmission for less than a new one.
