Trailer Hitch

OK, I know there is some cardinal sin over this, but here goes;

I'm thinking about doing some solo II's again, but no way do I want to run the RX8. Tires, rims etc, not to mention compared to my shifter kart it's just plain slow. But I wouldn't mind towing an ultralight kart trailer with the RX8 - a combined weight total of about 350 lbs.

First has anyone got any experience towing a little trailer? If so let me know how the RX8 endured it.

Second, who makes a decent class I hitch?

Here are some older threads on the subject, I should see if any other hitches are out for the 8. For track days a track trailer would be usefull. If a Porsche can pull one, why not a RX-8?

Never thought of towing anything with my 8 at all.. since it has low torque and all. Checked out a few of those other threads and one of them ripped the truck out (over dramatising it lol). But to me I just think that the engineers didnt design the 8 to be towing anything.

Edit: Ok just rechecked the 2nd thread Expo posted it has a picture of one of the hitches. I think I notice the problem, it has no actual contact to the frame itself just to the trunk, two closely placed parts do attach to the bumber portion of the frame (if that) but the stress it has must be immense. I'd avoid a hitch if this is the only one they have out.

I could easily tow a 650lb motorcycle on a 6ft. tilt trailer 80mph,up hill, with my 130TQ 4 cylinder integra and 4 banger accord. Probably about 1100 lbs. I think you should be more concerned about how it affects the handling of the 8. Trailers have to be ballanced to tow correctly. Jeez a small trailer at 350 lbs would probably feel like it's not even there. I've seen small cargo trailers towed by miatas. A motorcycle can pull more weight than that.

U haul has a hitch for the 8.

I'm sure stretching the abilities of a sports car is more than bewildering and challenges the mind. But, wouldn't it be more practical to have an SUV or a truck haul something this heavy rather than an RX-8? It's not designed to do this kind of thing.

What the starter of this thread and I had in mind was something like this. Were not planning on towing a 20’ camper with the 8. But if you ever tried to pack this car with an extra set of tires, tools, clothes etc for a 3-day track weekend you can see how having something like this would be handy.

big deal .... 3 adult sitting in your car will weight way more than 350 lbs. Yeah I know how the tow thing attach but, hey, it works. I dont see why not !
