tow 100 feet = de-flood?
Will towing my RX8 about a 100 feet de flood it??...I hear this works with a plug change??...i dont feel like paying fo labour if this happens again...help

Have done this many times over the years on flooded or low compression rotary Mazda's. 2nd gear with around 2500rpm on it should be enough to spit out the crap & get the air/fuel mix good enough to ignite. REgards |

Can someone elaborate on the exact procedure for this? I'd like to know the best way to tow an 8 (besides talking an actual tow truck driver into it).

Hook a towing strap to the car (I would put in one or both of the tie down hooks and use those)
Tow car to about 15MPH...release the clutch slowly in second gear ( with the ign key ON :) ) and hold the throttle down while it turns over and begins to run. Put your foot on the clutch..and rev it until it runs well.....watching that you don't rear end your tow car :). At this point it should idle...and you can disconnect the tow rope and take it for a burn to clear out the crap. Be ready for a hell of a smoke show when it starts if it is really flooded...the last time I did it I had a guy stop with a fire extinguisher cause he thought that my car was on fire :) |
There's no need to go that fast to deflood the rotary. I've been doing the push starting thing for over 15yrs on all generations of rotary cars and probably have more experience doing this than most on this forum. If your being pushed or towed, slowly release the clutch in 1st at about 5mph. Then give it some gas when the rpms near 1,500. The whole purpose is to help the engine make more compression by rotating the engine much faster than what the starter can do. Engines with weak compression from stuck seals (from excessive carbon buildup) will leak compression internally around the rotor. This keeps the fuel/air mixture from fully exploding cause of the lack of pressure. The faster rotation of the push/pull start virtually eliminates the compression back flow to the other rotor faces (which happens at really low rpms on weak compression engines) so the engine fires up. Keep in mind this only works for manuels.

I push-started mine when the electrical system was #$%&ed (then watched the sick PCM make it sputter and die). Would just getting a dude behind it to push it be enough? And how fast would he have to get away from the tailpipes, I wonder...
