Torque app and it's avg mpg reading
 

Ok searching on this was really difficult because the dang apps name is tourque and theres a crap load of rx8 posts about tourque, but they mostly apply to HP ratings not an android app.

So i got my odb2 bluetooth scanner yesterday and got it all set up last night. Then this morning turned it all on so i could check it on on my drive into work. It's only the free version, but i wanted to see how things read and while most things were pretty close the mpg was seriously off!

I went into settings and changed the displacement to 1.3 but this thing is giving me avg mpg readings in the high 20s to low 30s. Theres no way im getting mileage like that even if i consider my trip being mostly highway. At one point during the trip i was getting 37mpg. Now i've never actually done fill ups and mile calculations, but im really only curious about "close enough" readings. From what i see from my stops to fill up and how quickly the tank drains i know im not getting that sort of mileage.

Dos anyone else use this app for stuff like mpg readings?

Displacement should be set more like 2.6L if you want to make it more like a "piston engine"

Also note that obd2 mpg readings are a factor of the MAF, Vss (vehicle speed), and AFR ... they are not accurate indicators as it doesn't take into account various other factors that can affect your mpg. Take it with a grain of salt.

Yeah i was thinking the numbers i was seeing should be almost cut in half. I imagine if i change displacement to 2.6 it would effectivly cause tourque to reduce the numbers by 50%.

MPG calculations are never really truly100% accurate, but it would be nice to have something that was even within 2-3mpg of actual just so i had some sort of visual idea.

It should be basing its fuel usage estimates on the fuel injector duty cycle. If it doesn't know what flow the fuel injectors produce when they are open, then the calculation will be incorrect. Some other OBD based fuel calculators allow you to enter actual fuel consumption (odometer readings and gallons of fuel filled) to calibrate their fuel usage and efficiency calculations. I am expecting my OBD-2 module soon, and will get to play with Torque then.

I ended up purchasing the pro version since it was only $5. After setting up the profile and checking the box for enhaced mpg calcs i took a trip and it seems real world now. I was getting 15-17mpg which is more what i expected.

The free version is great for making sure your odb device can connect and tourque works with it, but beyond that it's basically worthless compared to the pro version.

Just curious, and not to change the subject, which bluetooth scanner did you end up going with? I bought a couple highly recommended cheap ones that were basically useless to me and returned them. Thanks.

I bought the BAFX elm one off of amazon for 25 or so. The only problem i've had so far is the fact the odb port is vertical and the scanner sort of sits down in the way. There's probably a way to move the port or cables to relocate the scanner, i just haven't looked yet. Other than that it's been working fine, although i have only used it a few times so far.

I bought the ODB+Key from a UK company. Set me back a bit, but it's been flawless and when it's plugged in it's very nearly tucked out of sight. Didn't want to waste money on breaking ebay ones.

So far it's working, even though I kicked it a few times due to the crappy placement of the obd connector. However, you can easily remove the connector and tuck it away like RIWWP said.
