Tips on the Quarter Mile

I've taken my car to the track a few times and ran the quarter mile. i usually run around 15.2 to 15.3. My RX-8 is stock. I was wondering what would be the optimal RPM to shift at. I've been shifting close to 9000.

Also, how big a help is lowering the PSI in your tires. Would you guys recomend it?

Any other tips are appreciated.

Thanks.

Not a pro answer, but I hear people like the 23 PSI tire range for launches...other than that, I'm lost.

You should be shifting over 9000. That will get you into a better spot in the power band, for 1st/2nd/3rd gears.

I have no idea. Try autocrossing instead. :D:

(somebody had to say it)

Touche, but autocrosses are cheap miniature HPDEs. I'm still too po' to make it out to a full track day. :p:

try to shift right b4 fuel cut off...or as close as possible....what were your previous 60ft times?

Press the green circle button + quick japs of the down button to hold revs. Then quickly hit the X-button when light turns green! Hit the lower left button for NOS. Try to get power-ups to increase speed.
If fail, hit Start again.

Oh wait.... wrong forum.

It all depends upon your reaction time from the light.

It also depends upon your reaction time in shifting.
The stock RX8 looses power at 8 grand.

RT has nothing to do with ET

willhutchins16 08-23-2008 02:48 PM

my 60ft time is tyically 2.3ish.

chancejat 08-23-2008 03:09 PM

what rpm do you launch at.....2.0-2.1 is definitely doable.....i usually launch at 7k and get 2.0-2.1 60's

willhutchins16 08-24-2008 11:03 PM

ill try 7000. ive been doin around 4000. traction control off right?

chancejat 08-24-2008 11:17 PM

yep......

^Yes, make sure you hold down the button for more than 7 seconds to fully turn everything off. Just pressing the button once turns off DSC, If you hold it down you will have 2 lights come on. the "DSC" and the car with curvy lines under it.

Where in NC do you live? and where are you racing at? I live in charlotte..

willhutchins16 08-24-2008 11:25 PM

I live in jacksonville. its down by wilmington. camp lejune. i race at coastal plains raceway.

i know all these questions are kinda beginner ones, i appreciate all your guys' answers. im a high school student who got lucky and got an rx-8 lol. tryin to learn all i can about racing and cars in general.

If you're going to try to launch at that high an RPM, word of advice - don't try to drive through wheel hop. You will smurf up your car.

If you start hopping, back off the throttle to stop it, then drive hard the rest of the way to get some practice shifting etc. Just chalk it up as a blown run, and know you'll be able to run next time around, instead of calling the tow truck.

rddragoness 08-25-2008 12:31 AM

I can't believe you guys are telling him to turn the dsc completely OFF.....a partial disengagement will give him enough boost to practice with without getting him killed. GEEZ guys...track or no track.... :/

Once he gets used to that and can get a fairly good launch, then the complete babysitter comes off.

HeavyMetal699 08-25-2008 12:40 AM

Actually leaving ABS on will do more harm than good. Drag racing is not rocket science.

I believe someone made a thread a while ago about autocrossing with everything turned on. It killed his braking system.

For drag racing I'd rather have excessive wheel spin over putting additional strain on the glass drive train.

Ross_Dawg 08-25-2008 04:40 PM

yeah I remember the first time I went to the track I forgot about DSC. lets just say I ran a 17.1 lol

yeah wheel hop is bad........

CyberPitz 08-25-2008 06:11 PM

7k launch? I didn't think that would be safe on the clutch! I always thought 4-5 was a little on the high side, but very doable.

Jedi54 08-25-2008 06:14 PM

it's not GOOD on the clutch but if you want to be good at the 1/4 mile, it's the price of admission. :)
