Just curious about how the cops catch the speed limit violators. I had certain thoughts in the back of my mind.

1) Where do the cops hide with the radar gun to find out your speed? In the bushes by the interstate?

2) Suppose you are driving in an elevated Interstate where both the edges are barricaded by concrete, how would you get caught if you speed as there is no way cops can get in right?

3) If there are a group of cars speeding together at almost the same speed, which car is going to be ticketed?

1. in any place they can stick their guns through
2. they would trail behind ur ass
3. the one they don't like the most

To do that they have to be on the interstate right? And you would notice them if they are!

1. We usually have them mounted on our dash boards.

2. We can follow and pace your speed. And on the ticket it will say "paced at ** on a **"

3. Usually the lead vehicle. Or the guy driving the cross fire.

Man why can't you work in Lubbock for like a week or so, I just got a speeding ticket :rant:

Didn't see the posted mileage and just guessed, I guessed wrong. Should have known every access road in lubbock off the loop was 50. :banghead:

You should take a trip up here and make it "disappear" somehow =O

As for the topic on the thread...

1. The ones here mount on Dashboard or on the pilar at the windshield

2. They can follow you from pretty far behind and guesstimate your speed and pull you over for that

3. More than likely the first one.

I dont think my question was answered? Let me rephrase it

I am a police officer who wants to catch speed violators on interstate say 999.
The only way I can get to these interstate is through exits because both the sides/edges of the interstate have 2 feet high concrete border/barricade. Where would I have to position myself to catch these speed violators so that I can get behind them quickly before they reduce their speed!

Sorry shini I wish I could but I'm a workaholic. Average about 78 hours a week. That's the only reason I traded the 8 for the bmer.

They can get you even after you slow down. If you are paranoid of getting caught in this area, then slow down when going through and don't worry about it.

?? If there's a shoulder that's wide enough they can park there (as always - in the shade of an overpass to blend the car better & stay cool, or coming out of a corner where you won't see them til the last second.)

If there's no shoulder on either side, they would not be able to "position" themselves anywhere. They would have to pace you. Mostly just by chance timing after coming onto said highway and seeing you fly by as they merge.

The cops in my town use motorcycles for highway speed violators.

They'll setup shop at the end of the exit ramp, they catch people from a pretty far distance, and as soon as they get someone they just ride the on the shoulder of the exit ramp to get on the highway then they pull people over from there...

Kills 2 birds with 1 stone, they get the guys on the highway and can get people on the access road on the side aswell that are speeding.

If you're in a car there isn't much I can think of that you'd be able to do other than patrol around and hope some idiot passes you going 100 or you can catch them getting on the on ramp going 100 and do what Stunna said.

Wait what am I doing, I'm giving out advice to the one thing that I can honestly say I hate in this world...God help me I've lost my mind :tear:

1. Someplace where line of sight happens at the range of the radar or laser. Around a blind bend, over the crest of a hill, in a depressed part of the median, etc. No billboards on Interstates, so that old standby does not work.

2. If there's no place to work safely, they're not going to set up a fixed location. That's where unmarked cars come in. Even then, they're going to pull the speeder over in a safe spot.

3. Whoever they get. Lead is generally vulnerable from a fixed location, but they have their choice. Sometimes it's the one with the pretty girl. I've heard of them flagging everyone over.

in Massachusetts it is not uncommon for the state police to set up shop at an underpass near the top of a hill. A cop in an unmarked cruiser stands with a radar gun and clocks cars as they come into view. Then a quarter mile down the road they have 3 cruisers and wave cars over 5 at a time and give them all tickets.

To add insult to injury, a few miles down the road from that they have ANOTHER cop, waiting to catch all the people who sped back up after the trap.

It's pretty rare that you will actually see a cop on the shoulder of the highway several miles up ahead. They aren't stupid, they do it for a living. Most of the time I see them under an underpass in the shade or in a "dip" in elevation on the highway where you really cant see them if you're 500 feet away.

We all like to go fast in our 8s but you just have to learn how to be careful. Learn where the cops camp out in your area and slow down there and anywhere else you don't feel comfortable. If it's a 2 or 3 lane highway with no shoulders, sure, punch it. Just watch out and ultimately, don't speed unless you want to pay a speeding ticket. I've had two myself in about a year and half and both of them were 25+ over so I deserved them (granted one was at like 2am and I was the only person on the road >:( ). Just stay out of the fast lane and most of the time you should be fine.

Cops here just drive everywhere with their moving radar on - one beam clocks oncoming traffic, the other reads the cops moving speed, and subtracts it. They make lots of U-turns to getcha.

The twin beams are so strong, they can be picked up by any radar detector for literally three miles. If you get caught here, it's because you don't have a detector.

Sometimes they get clever, and zap each car as it gets close, so as not to give them any warning, but if they radar anyone within a mile or so of me, my detector will get a brief alert.

Five years, four with the '8, no tickets.....

Couple of weeks ago, had a cop pull onto the highway behind me, on my way to work, in the dark.......zoomed right up to my bumper, headlights so bright there was no way to see it was a cruiser, so close he could have read the DOT # on my tail lights. Seemed like he was trying to get me to react by speeding up, but I just set my cruise at 62, nice and steady. Stayed there a couple of miles, prolly running my plate, then did his U-turn at the next junction and went on his way.
I could easily have got myself a doozy of a ticket - if he could have resisted radar'ing that truck going the other way, before he chose to climb on my ass......

Just curious...

In my neighborhood we have these radar stands that show our speed when we go by to help discourage speeding. My 8 displays 2 miles faster than what the detector shows, anyone else noticed something like that?

All car speedo's are one or two 'fast', so you can't claim the speedo got you a ticket.

Does it to laser as well?

Forget about finding a detector for lasers...I have a Valentine and not even that will pick up lasers in time...allthough if you get clocked speeding by any type of radar with a val your a dunce....

Get a Valentine....and a Laser jammer...and life will be very good

Valentines I remember from back in the day when I use to street race my Trans Am. They were the cream of the crop from what I can remember. I'll take a look into them.

As far as laser jammers, aren't they illegal to have? I remember one of my friends telling me that a looooong time ago whenever I mentioned wanting some. I wouldn't want to get something installed that has potential to get me into even trouble if I ever I do get pulled over with a Valentine + Laser Jammers.

i came around a turn doing about 95 and saw a cop way in the distance down the road. i hit the brakes, but not hard enough to rock the car. unfortunately. it wasnt hard enough to slow the car enough either.

clocked at 84 in a 55. ticket says 74 in 55. at least its below the 20mph+. $90 bucks, not bad. but im going to court to remove the points. its my first ticket.

thinking about getting a valentine, but the $400 price tag is kinda turning me off.

This was a long time ago - like 1971 or 1972 - but I saw a decoy radar trap on the Mass Pike. Traditional fixed radar/pickup point setup like they used to do back then. But something didn't look right. Radar car just too visible, and the pcikup point too close down the road. Not enough police around, either.

So I slowed down. Ten miles later there was a real radar setup, vehicles properly positioned, doing lots of business.

in i-95 theres signs that say "speed limit enforced by aircraft"?.. what the hell does that mean?
